“If I did, do you think I would tell you?”

No, but he had to ask. So far, he hadn’t learned anything new. Lindstrom could be behind this, but Trey doubted it. “I don’t see you as the type of guy to trust someone else to do this for you. Why would you, of all people, pay someone and give them your personal and financial information? They could hold it over you if they wanted to.”

“You really think I’d do business with someone I hadn’t fully vetted?”

“You do know who runs the site.” Trey leaned in. “So, you either trust them or you have dirt on them. Which is it?”

“Agent Fenley, this is a hypothetical conversation.”

Yeah right, and he had an invisible unicorn named Fluffy.

“Yes, so you said.” Trey pushed back from the table and stood. He shook the lawyer’s hand out of courtesy but wasn’t’ allowed to touch Gunter, an inmate.

Lindstrom tipped his head toward his lawyer. “You’re wrong about Klein. He cares a great deal about the money I pay him as well.”

The lawyer huffed.

Trey’s brow quirked. Definitely.

“Oh, and Agent Fenley. It would be stupid not to change the password frequently. If it were me, I’d do it daily.”

He nodded and walked out. After retrieving his personal items, Trey climbed in his car and called Becca at the office.

“Hello, Agent Fenley. What can I do for you?”

“First, you can tell me why you’re in the office today? I was going to leave you a message.”

“I’m just finishing up a few things for the boss. What’s up?”

“I need to do some digging into Gunter Lindstrom. His close friends and business associates. Can you help me?”

“Do you need it today?”

“Wow, you’re amazing. No, get it to me whenever you can. Thanks.”

“I’ll have it for you by Tuesday if that works for you.”

“Perfect. And Becca, remind me to buy you lunch one day next week.”

“I’ll add it to the calendar.” He could hear the smile in her voice as she hung up the phone.

Chapter 21

The door to her hospital room opened. Amy scooted up in her bed. A twinge of pain ran down her arm. She ignored it. She should ask for another pain killer but hated how groggy they made her feel.

Trey hadn’t been there since last night.

At least she thought he was here. She’d been in a pain medicine filled stupor. But today, the emptiness in her stomach upon waking had nothing to do with lack of food and too many meds.

She missed seeing him and had hoped he’d be here when she woke. Amy punched the bed. What did she think was going on between her and Fenley, a stinkin’ romantic movie? Like he’d come with roses and kiss away all her aches and worries.

Grow up, girl. Your life won’t air on the Hallmark Channel.

A bouquet of flowers cleared the door, and damn if Amy didn’t run a hand over her bedhead.

Daisies, aww. Okay, she could forgive him for not being here this morning.

The flowers dropped revealing Ryan Daniels’ handsome face. “Hey girl, how are you feeling?”
