“Right.” The word barely makes it past the knot tightening in my throat. “Thanks.” I step back from the doorway, managing a polite smile that feels anything but genuine before turning away.
Every step down the path feels heavier than the last.
This house holds almost every memory I have of us.
Our first nights together.
The laughter.
The arguments.
The makeup sex.
The plans we had made for a future that suddenly feels further away than ever.
And now she’s gone.
I stop at the front gate and drag a hand through my hair, fighting the sinking feeling in my chest.
Goddammit! She could be anywhere.
But one person might know where she’s gone.
Kenzi.
Chapter Forty-Four
Caleb
When I arrive, I climb out of the cab and hurry up Kenzi’s path, pounding on the front door. I don’t call out. If Indi is here and she hears my voice, she’ll run before I get the chance to explain anything.
I knock again.
“All right, all right, I’m coming. Sheesh,” Kenzi calls from inside.
The door swings open, and her eyes widen.
Before she can say a word, I push past her. “Where is she?” I call, already moving through the house. “Indi?”
Behind me, the front door closes with a sharp click.
“Well, come on in, why don’t you?” Kenzi says dryly.
I ignore the sarcasm and search every room I can find, throwing open doors and checking each one before moving to the next.
Nothing.
“Caleb,” she calls. “She’s not here.”
I stop and turn back toward the living room, where she is standing with her arms folded.
“Then where is she?”
“She moved into a place with another nurse from work. She didn’t want to stay here because she knew this would be the first place you would look.”
Her words hit harder than I expected them to.
She had planned for me.
