She gapes at me. “Me? You’re the one trying to start a fight.”

“You have to be kidding me?”

“Now, children.” Lachlan saunters into the room, holding papers in his hand. “Are we alright in here? Is everyone playing nicely?”

“We’re fine!” we grumble in unison.

Lachlan’s eyes widen. “How about we give you both a timeout and get these papers signed.”

My eyes snap to his. “Don’t.”

“Stop being so argumentative,” Lola sneers at me.

I pick up my pen, signing the papers as fast as I can get through them. “If you’ll excuse me.” I brush past her, ready to get as far away from her as I can.

“Lennox?” My name on her lips beckons the demons I have for her.

I stop, turning to her. “I’ll need a few things before I leave.”

“Fine.” I practically stomp over to her side.

Lachlan howls. “Sorry, but this is hilarious.”

“Maybe you can explain it to me one day.”

Lola peeks up at me. “I’m sure the time will pass quickly, and I’ll be gone before you realize.”

My shoulders slump as a pain in my chest radiates outward. “You’re right, and the harder we work, the faster it’ll go.”

Lola hands Lachlan the paperwork. “I’ll go get you a copy.”

“There’s a…”

Lachlan cuts me off. “It’s broken.” He hurries from the room again.

“Well, has he always been ‘Mister Obvious’?” Lola snickers.

“I suppose so, or at least as long as I’ve been ‘Mister Asshole’.”

She snorts and covers her face. “Please tell me that wasn’t as loud as I thought it was.”

“Oh, it echoed.”

She slaps at me. “Stop! It did not.”

The room fills with such a silence my ears begin to ring. “Was there something I can get for you?”

She tucks her hair behind her ear, holding her phone out. “I need your number.”

“Now you want my number.” I roll my eyes. “I see how it is.” I take it from her, adding my information and the company’s. “I added Alice’s number also.”

“Great, thank you.” She licks her lips, and I’ll be damned if my body doesn’t react to it. “For the record…”

Lachlan comes barging through the doors again. “Here we go. Let’s get you two separated.”

Lola takes her share after she picks up her bags. “So what time do we start?”

“Nine, if you’re asking me. Eleven for Lennox.” Lachlan snickers.
