I stare, wide-eyed at him and lie. “What do you mean?”
“Give me a tour.” He takes my hand, dragging me along with him. Truth be told, he doesn’t want to be alone with Millie or my parents.
I break free moving ahead of him. “As you can see, this is the master bed with bath there.” I point and spin quickly, darting out the door. “Guest bedroom and bath, kitchen, living, and utility.” I motion toward each.
“Not too bad.” He circles me, moving closer. “I assume you’re working.”
“I am, doing what I’m educated to do for once.”
“I see.” He grunts. “Cheap shots are not becoming of you.”
I tighten my jaw, trying to bite back my words. “Not cheap, if they’re honest.”
“Carter, how are you?” My dad walks in the room with us, standing opposite of Carter.
Carter nods. “Well. How are you?”
“Good, doing great.” Dad slips his arm around me. “Proud of our girl here.”
“I bet you are.” Carter smirks. “Lola, we’ll talk later.” He leans in, kissing me on my cheek.
“Goodbye.” I force myself to smile as I wave.
Millie’s in the utility room and when he walks out the door, she slams it behind him, locking it as she does. “Good riddance.”
“I have no words for that.”
Dad chuckles. “An ass, that’s the word I choose.”
“Truth!” I fist bump my dad.
