“Of course.” Mr. Fitz walks around, joining Laura as they leave.
I dig through my purse, yanking my phone out and dialing as fast as I can. “What’s up?”
“I got fired.” Tears well, but I’d rather stump my toe than cry. “Apparently, I’ve harassed several coworkers over Carter.”
“Basically, the hoochies at the office cooler,” she grumbles.
I press my lips together and open them with a pop. “Yep!”
“So what are you doing?” Her question stuns me into silence. What am I doing?
I collapse into the chair. “I have no idea.”
“I’m on my way. I’ll meet you at the house, and we’ll pack your things. Do you need a truck?” I can hear her shifting through papers.
“He’s keeping everything. I have my clothes.” I lay my head on the desk. “I need to go to the bank before he locks me out of it.”
“Go now. I’ll be there in two hours.” Millie hangs up, leaving me alone again.
I force myself up so I can gather my things and get the hell out of here. Ten minutes later, I’m dropping off the office keys and hailing a cab. I swing by the bank, taking out enough money to cover my last two paychecks.
The cab pulls up to the curb in front of the house. I get out, carrying my box from the office with me. As I unlock the front door, I’m quickly reminded of why I’m leaving.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” I drop the box in my arms, as I’m faced with a room full of other boxes.
A woman dressed in a uniform enters the room. “Oh, gracious! I’m sorry, I didn’t realize anyone was here.”
“I see that.” I lean over, looking in one of them. “I suppose Carter hired you.”
She nods with wide eyes. “Yes, ma’am. I apologize, he said you wouldn’t be here.”
“I bet he told you he was divorcing me too.” I quirk my brow.
She places her hand on her hip. “He did.”
“It’s okay, honestly. I’m praying he gets the clap and his nuts rot off.”
She snorts when she laughs. “Oh, he definitely isn’t getting rid of you. What can I help you do?”
“Are you driving?”
She narrows her eyes. “No, I have to call a cab.”
“Well, then … let’s have a drink while we pack.” I queue my favorite kick ass women with the best anthems and grab his most expensive bottle of wine.
An hour later, the doorbell rings before it opens. “Hey, where are you?”
“MILLIE!” I yell as I run from the bedroom to the front door. I wrap my arms around her, squeezing her like crazy. “Oh my god!! I’ve missed you so much.” Without warning, I’m in a pile on the floor, bawling like a baby.
“I’ve got you, love. You’re going to be fine. You’re an amazing woman, and you can do this.” She repeats this a hundred times or more, until my tears run out.
I’m not sure how long we’ve sat here, but when I come back to my senses, I realize something. I sit up, drying my face. “Millie?”
She sweeps my hair from my face. “Yeah, baby?”
“How, in the name of all that’s holy, is my big ass numb?”
Her mouth gapes, and we begin to laugh. “I have no clue.”
