“I need to get my purse, then I’ll follow you out.” I can’t help but ask myself if it’s the part of his wife or the job I’m playing.
I grab my bag and lock the door behind me. Carter’s standing by the car, holding the door open. I lift my foot to step in, and he catches my hand, kissing it. “You’re beautiful.”
“Thank you.” He leans in, taking my lips and making my heart race. This is the man I love. He closes the door once I’m in and walks around to the driver’s side. He starts the car, and we’re on the road minutes later.
The ride is quiet for the first few miles, both of us looking ahead. I suppose I’m anxious. I feel as though there are butterflies in my stomach. It’s then I remember to take my birth control pill.
I open my purse, taking the case out to pop out a pill. “Dang it, I don’t have a drink.”
“Why are you still taking those?” Carter hands me his coffee.
“You know, lots of reasons.” I toss it in, swallowing it down with the hot liquid.
“You should stop.” He takes his drink from my hand as I stare at him. “What? You should, they’re not good for you.”
“But they help regulate me and most importantly, they help with my PCOS.”
He sets the mug in the cup holder as he comes to a stop at a light. “Maybe they can give you something else.”
“What are you saying?” I twist in my seat to get a better look at him. “We discussed this, Carter.”
He gives a slight shrug. “I’ve been thinking, I want a family and with your issues, we may need to try longer.”
“I haven’t even held a job yet.” I swallow hard. “I want to work for a while before we have children.”
“And I want a baby.” He stares at me as if I’ll change my mind.
I shake my head, turning to face forward. “You promised me I could work for a few years before we had a family.”
“I changed my mind. Besides, it’s not like you’re going to get pregnant our first try. You said it yourself, it could take years. You may even need to begin a new medication regimen before we can have a child.”
I bite the inside of my lip. He may be right to an extent, but I refuse to admit it. “I’ll make an appointment with my doctor and talk it over with her.”
He takes my hand, raising it to place a kiss on it again. “That’s my girl.”
“You’re such a pain in the ass.”
He cocks his brow. “I’m happy to pain your ass anytime.”
“I bet you would be, smartass.”
“Are you obsessed with my ass, is that what this is about?” He glances at me, his eyes smoldering.
I squeeze my thighs together with the thought of him between them. “Always.”
Carter turns into a lot of a building so tall, I strain to look at it when he parks. We meet at the front of the car, and he points me toward the front entrance as we begin to walk. “I’m on the top floor. The secretary can tell you where to find my office if you need me.”
“You can’t tell me where I’ll be?” I ask as we enter the building.
“I don’t know, but I’m sure someone can show you how to call me as soon as you’re settled.” He nods as if he’s sending me off to school.
I motion toward a hall opposite of where we’re standing. “Oh, okay. This way?”
“Yes.” He tilts his head. “Please, don’t…”
I grind my teeth. “Embarrass you? Was that what you were thinking?”
“Do your best, and we’ll be fine.” His weak smile speaks volumes.
