“He does, that boy bought every gift I packed. He’d search the Internet for hours, checking baby sizes and clothes. What he didn’t spend like that, the rest went into her envelope. Well, and a college fund. He never kept a penny for himself. Most days, he was simply exhausted, but if it was a holiday or he’d find something extra for her, he’d work and get the money for it.” She beams with pride. “He’s an excellent boss too.”
I wipe a stray tear, her words gutting me beyond belief. “Her first box came around Christmas, before she was born.”
“He just knew you’d need the help. I thought it was wonderful when your friend helped him out. Mister Hatcher wanted to pay for the entire hospital stay. I honestly don’t know how he did it all and still graduated at the top of his class.” She hands me a tissue, taking one for herself.
“I see.” I dry my face as the room spins. Ridge has known this entire time and never said a word. Some best friend he’s been.
Her hand is on my back, reassuring me. “He was heartbroken, but I understand why you did it.”
“Do you?” My tears fall through my nervous giggle. “Please, enlighten me.”
“Well, dear. Don’t you know?” She studies me for a moment. “I always assumed that you didn’t want either of you to have any regrets, so you wouldn’t grow bitter for a life not lived.”
“Funny how that worked out.” My stomach pitches and rolls, making me gag with hate for myself.
“What do you mean?” Tina hands me another tissue.
I shake my head as my heart lay in tatters at my feet. “I wanted to save everyone from their regrets, but I forgot to save myself.”
“Do you have any?” She cocks her brow.
“Too many to list, but the most important one … time wasted. He deserves better than me. They both do.” I storm away, taking Rumor with me as I go.
