“Mackenzie. This is it. Thank you.”

“Miss Baker?” a gruff voice calls my name. I look around to find Mister Amburgey once again.

“Yes?” I check out my surroundings, expecting the worst.

He bows his head. “I want to apologize. Thorton’s a bully and as his boss, I feel responsible. You see, he wanted a promotion and knew the only way to get it was with the two of you. We like to promote within, but we always consider those with families first. Apparently, he thought you and your daughter were the fastest way to do it.”

“Wow. I didn’t have a clue.” I run my hand through my hair. “Thank you, I appreciate your honesty.”

“Don’t thank me. you have some good friends watching out for you.” He pats my arm. “Please tell Anderson we’ll talk next week.”

“How?” My brows knit.

He grins. “Apparently, you two ladies are extremely loved.”

“And blessed.” I wave, climbing into the back seat.

The driver takes a few turns and then the exit to the highway. I know Boone and Reed work for different companies, but I suppose I thought they’d live closer to one another.

About an hour later, the SUV starts to slow, coming to a stop in front of a beautiful home. Warm and inviting, we jump out, excited to be here. My heart flutters with the thought of Boone being here.

Maybe that’s why it’s so homey? I turn to the driver as he unloads our things. “Let me help with those.”

“Mister Hatcher warned me you’d want to help.” He smiles sweetly.

I raise a brow. “How long have you known Boone?”

“I’ve worked for Mister Hatcher for ten years, ma’am.” He nods toward the house, signaling me to open the door.

I grab a couple of bags and lead the way. Once the doors open, we amble in with our things. “So, have you always been his driver?”

“No, ma’am. He worked while in college, so he drove himself around. He didn’t want his parents prying, like any good parent would.” He folds his hands behind his back, still happy to answer my questions.

“I didn’t realize Boone worked and went to college. I wonder why? He didn’t need the money, so that makes no sense.”

“Doesn’t it?” He studies me as if I should know the answer. “I was a mail boy at that time, but he was still so kind. He had a hurt in his eyes, though, that touched his soul.”

I clutch at my stomach with the knowledge of his pain and where it came from. “I understand.”

“I can see that you do.” His forehead wrinkles. “He’s always loved you both, and he’s worked hard to prove it, even though you weren’t around.”

My breath hitches, as something more familiar speaks to my heart. “I don’t doubt it.”

“Please, he’d want you both to make yourself at home. The kitchen is just there. He had it fully stocked when he found out you were coming. If there’s anything you need, don’t hesitate to call. I believe you have my number already.” He smiles, bowing.

“I’ll be flying out tomorrow, as soon as I can figure out when, so I’ll let you know for a ride to the airport.”

“Of course.” He nods. “Good night.”

I follow him to the door, waving as he leaves. Locking the door behind me, I take my phone from my purse and make my way to the kitchen. I dig through the food until I find something for us to eat.

After I start our dinner, I send out a few texts.

We’re here, but you probably know by now.

--I do.

--Good.
