The cabin lights were dimmed. Most of the passengers around us were on their laptops or phones. No one was paying attention to us. I took advantage of the low light and the blanket covering her, slipping my hand higher up her thigh, feeling the heat of her through the fabric of her pants.

I flicked the button open and then ever so slowly slid down the zipper. She let out a soft, barely audible gasp as I slipped my hand under her panties. I felt her muscles tighten. “Fox,” she hissed again, but there was less warning this time, more of a breathless urgency.

“How upset would you be if we got banned from the airline for life?” I asked, leaning in until my lips brushed against her ear.

She glared at me. Rather, she tried. The desire in her eyes made her feelings very clear. “Are you serious right now?” she whispered.

I nodded, pushing my fingers down until I could feel the wet heat between her thighs. “Dead serious.”

She closed her eyes, swallowing hard. She knew she should push me away, but instead, she opened her legs, encouraging me to keep going. I slipped a finger inside her. Her mouth opened in a silent gasp. She looked like she was trying to hold on to her composure, but I was determined to take it away from her.

“Keep quiet,” I murmured against her ear. “Unless you want everyone to know.”

Her nails dug into my forearm. I knew she was fighting to keep her moans trapped behind her teeth. It was exhilarating to watch her come undone like this. I loved knowing I was the one making her lose control.

She squirmed in her seat. Suddenly, she clamped her hand over mine. “Enough,” she breathed out, a tremble in her voice that wasn’t fear. “Fox, I mean it.”

I stopped but didn’t move my hand away from the heat of her skin. My finger was still inside her slick heat. “Don’t tell me you’re not enjoying this,” I said. She was warm and wet and all I could think about was how much I wanted to feel her underneath me again.

Natalia took a deep breath but couldn’t hide the desire that flashed in her eyes. I ran my finger over her clit. She gasped, a soft moan escaping her lips.

“That’s it,” I whispered. “Right there, right? Feels good.”

She groaned, the sound so soft only I heard it.

Her head tilted back reflexively, eyes fluttering closed as she bit her bottom lip. I couldn’t help the smirk that played at the corners of my mouth.

“Fox.” Her voice was a whisper this time. “I can’t believe I’m letting you do this.”

The plane bumped with a bit of turbulence. She gasped and I took the opportunity to push deeper and curled my fingers just right. She shuddered clamping a hand over her mouth to stifle the sound. I felt her body squeeze and erupt with her juices flooding over my fingers.

I pressed my lips to her temple. “How about now? Will you give me your number?”

She turned her head, meeting my gaze with a look that was a mix of frustration and need. Her cheeks were flushed with her chest rising and falling with uneven breaths. “Close,” she murmured. “But not yet.”

I pulled my hand away, satisfied for now. She turned back to her tablet, trying to focus, but I could see the aftershocks of what I’d done rippling through her, the way her hand trembled slightly as she swiped across the screen.

“You know you want me on speed dial,” I said. “Even if it’s just a booty call.”

“Not happening,” she said.

I chuckled and leaned back to enjoy the rest of the flight.

We landed in Seattle a short time later. We walked through the airport together, but she declined my offer for a ride home. I watched her go.

“What the hell?”

I shook my head and walked to my truck. When I got home, it was quiet. The kind of quiet that usually felt like a relief after days of meetings and travel. But tonight, it felt empty. I tossed my suitcase onto the bed, unzipping it to unpack.

I walked to my dresser, pulled open the drawer, and there it was. The black glove. I stopped, staring at it. The glove I’d never been able to throw away. Just looking at it stirred something inside me, something complicated. Guilt. Desire. Confusion.

I snatched the glove and sat down on the edge of the bed. It had been almost a year since that night. A masquerade party, a woman in a black dress, a connection that felt like lightning striking. I never got her name, but I’d thought about her ever since. Dreamed about her. Fantasized about her. It was like love at first sight, if you believed in that sort of thing.

And now there was Natalia. Beautiful, sharp-edged Natalia, who made me feel like I was always one step behind, like I was constantly trying to catch up to her, figure her out. I wanted her so badly, it was like a physical ache. But then I saw this glove, and I was thrown back into memories of that night. The feeling of that woman’s body pressed against mine, her whispered laugh in my ear.

I wondered, not for the first time, if I would ever get another invitation to that party. If I did, would I go? Even now, when I was wrapped up in this whirlwind with Natalia, I couldn’t help but think about it. About her.

I tossed the glove back into the drawer and closed it. I felt like an idiot. What was I doing? Chasing ghosts when I had something real, something tangible right in front of me.
