Someone knocked on my door.

“This is certainly ominous,” I muttered under my breath.

I went to the door and opened it. Capricorn and Scorpio stood on the other side.

Capricorn gave me a small smile. “May we come in?”

CHAPTER 2

THE REMEMBRANCE ORB

Istepped aside to let Capricorn and Scorpio pass. A gentle breeze cut through the room, and the door brushed close behind them.

“I’ve been meaning to thank you both for helping me escape Fenris’s fortress,” I said. “But I couldn’t find you.”

“We’ve been busy,” Capricorn said.

“Is this about the Paragons of Magic?”

“Yes. And lost memories.”

“You returned the Apprentices’ lost memories to them.”

“Portia, the Princess of Portals, taught us the spell. But first she used it on us.” Capricorn watched me for my reaction.

“Wait, so you had missing memories too?”

“Savannah, all of our memories were missing. Or at least all memories of our true selves.”

“Your true selves?”

“Spirits,” Scorpio said. “We were spirits.”

“You’re spirits,” I gasped.

“We were spirits.”

“So you’re no longer spirits?”

“Yes. And no. We still have access to our old magic, but we are corporeal.” Scorpio indicated his body, and a strange look fell over his face. It was almost sorrowful.

“What happened?” I asked. “How did you become this way?”

“There was a disagreement between two factions of spirits, and we fell on the wrong side of it,” Capricorn told me.

“A disagreement? About what?”

“The Curse.”

My heart stopped for a moment.

Capricorn didn’t seem to notice. She continued on. “Some spirits wanted to end the Curse. Others did not.”

“What?” I said. “Why? Who wouldn’t want to end the Curse?”

“The majority of the spirits,” she said. “But it’s not like they didn’t want to end the Curse. They just refused to interfere in corporeal matters.”

“But they do that every year! The Knights of Gaia exist because the spirits give them magic. That’s interfering.”
