No matter how much she burned, I’d burn with her, so one last time, I kissed her. I held her. I held my burning stars and sun. One last time. “I love you. I love you so much. I’m sorry, I should have said it before. I should have said it more.”

Tears slid down her face. “I love you, Kil.”

The air around her burned colder than ice. I reached to rest a hand over her chest. “I can’t,” I whispered, magic gilding from around me and wrapped around her, absorbing hers…killing hers. “I can’t do it.”

She put a hand over mine, stopping me from pulling back and mouthed, “Please. I want it to be you.”

I ached.

My soul and heart ached.

Whatever was beyond this life, hell or heaven, I’d never let her part without me.

Pulling a dagger from my holster, I aimed it to my chest, slowly forcing it through my flesh.

She gasped, trying to pull back. “No, please,” she cried, more tears pouring out of her golden eyes that held my sun, the only sun I’d ever known. The only sun I would ever know. The only sun I would bask under. I held her hand tightly, and for every part of her I killed, I dug the blade deeper. “Please, no! Please, Kil. Please!”

They tore me—her cries tore at me viciously.

But they slowly died with her.

Weakness falling over her limbs.

“We would have definitely named at least one black haired baby Rain,” I murmured over her lips, holding her close to me. “You would have let me. Rain is a pretty name. Would have suited a girl or a boy.”

She gave me a shaky smile and nodded. The glow over her skin dowsing and slowly fading, and so did the taste of electric power in the air. Her eyes were struggling to remain open, but she murmured, “Rain.”

“There was this one place,” I continued, death howling around us still. “I wanted to take you there. We…we could have seen the sunrise on top of it.”

She blinked slowly along her dying breath, the gold of her irises vibrant, so vibrant. There was not much strength left in me either, but I used it all to keep my eyes open for as long as I could, to just look at her.

“Snow?”

She didn’t answer.

Her chest was not moving.

Her heart was silent.

Skies were silent.

So silent.

I swayed the two of us, holding onto her for as long as I could. My whole body was numb. Ready to surrender. Holding on just to hold her a bit longer. I cried with her in my arms. Bled with her in my arms. “My love. My heart. My Snow.”

Brightness of the day peaked through the shield of darkness that abated and a body landed near mine, a hand pulling against my shoulder. My brother pulled the dagger out of my chest, holding his hands over the wound. “No,” he screamed, shaking and crying. “I promised her. I gave her my word. Do not do this to me, Kil. Do not do this to me!”

Oryn came next, his mouth moved fast, but I couldn’t hear anything and couldn’t feel anything beside the wetness of blood dripping down my stomach and the heat of my lover fading away.

Visha kneeled beside Snow and so did Penelope and Urinthia. There was no fight left in me when they pried Snow’s lifeless body from my arms.

A flash of blinding red was the last thing I saw before I felt myself take one last short breath.
