Chapter thirty-one

White Knight to D2

Snowlin

There was still a hue of happiness in the atmosphere even days after Nia’s wedding. It was bothering me.

“Love,” Kilian called from where he had leaned against the headboard, fiddling with the scribbles I’d copied from Esmeray diaries, still searching for answers to questions I didn’t even know we had. I’d gone to the woman’s grave and attempted to dig her up several times before Kilian had mildly convinced me she wouldn’t die a second time. “Are you trying to kill me, woman?”

My feet were burning from how much I had paced back and forth. I flicked a hand at him. “You know I’m over it now, darling.”

He threw his head back and laughed hard enough to get my attention. “Come here, my old nemesis, and give me a kiss, my back is killing me.”

“Old man.”

“Brat.” He patted the space next to him and I sat right where he wanted me. “My obedient brat.”

“Where is my kiss?”

He smiled, lowering his mouth to mine and kissing me. “Care to tell me why you are trying to outrun lady time?”

“It’s quiet.”

He took a moment to process my words and whatever was written on my face. After abandoning the notes on the other side of the bed, he gathered me in his arms and just held me. “Do you want to run?”

“No, but maybe we could go for a walk. Can’t have your back give out on you, I’ve got so many activities planned you need your back for.”

“That so?”

“That is indeed so,” I agreed.

“Alright, my missus, let’s go for a walk.”

“Actually. Let’s do something else. Something you like.”

“Something I like?”

I nodded. “There must be something.”

His smile was so soft I could almost melt to the floor. “There is.”

I had to bite my lip from smiling. “Something else.”

He thought about it for a moment. “There might be a place I want to show you.”

Amaris was loud at midnight. Most people walking the streets of the city were either heading to work or preparing to start work.

“How does it work?” I asked. “Night. Day.” There was still so much I didn’t know about his people—his kingdom. Mine as well, I guess.

“Some sleep during the day, some at night. Most Aura cannot fall asleep during the time of our goddess. There is a rush of adrenaline and power when the skies turn dark, shadows grow taller and thicker. So they sleep during the day.”

“But you sleep both times.”

“Depends. There is not a particular time I feel the surge of my magic, I simply feel it all the time,” he explained, handing a street baker a few coins in exchange for a fluffy pastry of sorts. “Day and night. But I do sleep better at night sometimes. Light bothers me. Though I’ve been told by many scholars that it has nothing to do with being an Obscur. Not a general trait we possess.”

Cause you were made to hate it, darling.

I might have moaned when the flavour of the treat melted on my tongue, because he chuckled. “That good, huh?”
