Michael finished his dinner, then eyed hers.
She smiled and nudged it toward him.
“I’m not proud.” He traded his empty plate for hers and ate while she finished the yogurt.
“You need more?” he asked.
She shook her head.
“Okay. I’ll make sure we have soft food for you until that heals.”
Obviously, he was thinking they’d be together. But what if they weren’t? What if he was sent back to the US and she and Jasmine were sent elsewhere?
“Hey.”
She blinked the questions away to look into his kind face.
“I’m not leaving you. Whatever happens, we’re in it together. I promise.”
“Okay.” She rasped the word.
“What did…?” He shook his head. “I’m guessing he strangled you. Was it Shehab?”
She nodded.
“Why?”
“For information from Jasmine.”
“Interesting.” The single word held meaning she couldn’t decipher.
The team member who doubled as their medic had looked at her throat and told her that she would heal in time.
The glass door opened, and Brock stepped through.
Michael stood, and Leila did, too, as he approached.
“You two ready?”
“For what, sir?” Michael asked.
“There it is again,” Brock said. “You calling me sir. Not sure I’m going to get used to that.”
Michael’s smile was tight. “Where’s Jasmine?”
“She’s in the car. Tile’s gonna drive you to the airport.”
“What’s happening?” Michael asked.
But Brock spoke to Leila. “Your sister had a lot of information, which she gave up in exchange for asylum for both of you.”
“Oh.” Leila pressed a hand against her throat and the pain the single word caused.
“Jasmine needs to eat.” Michael, always considerate, glanced back at the table of food. “I can grab her a plate.”
“I’m not a monster, Wrong.” Brock shook his head and smiled at Leila. “She ate in the room before I questioned her. Did you get something?”
She nodded. “Thank you.”
