But not fully.

She was listening.

Michael cursed the circumstances. He needed to get Jasmine alone to figure out why she was lying to him. Was she a terrorist? Had she been working with Hasan, Waleed, and Qasim?

By the disgust he’d seen in her expression and the vehemence he’d heard in her words, he guessed not, but some people were good at deceit.

The twins’ father and uncle looked identical but were opposites, good and evil. Or at least good-ish and evil.

Was Jasmine the evil twin?

He let the idea float in his mind, but it wouldn’t take root. If she was lying, she was very, very good at it.

“Leila saw a map in an office at the compound,” he said.

Jasmine’s lips showed true amusement, and he realized how seldom she smiled. “Yes, that is how I discovered she was there. I saw her scaling the wall like Spider-Man. It was quite something.”

“I’m sure.” Michael tried not to picture his petite, fragile girlfriend hanging from tiny handholds three stories up. “What are they planning in Munich?”

The door between the rooms inched open. He couldn’t see Leila there, but he could sense her. He willed her to keep quiet.

Jasmine licked her lips. She looked terrified. “I do not know.”

“Why are you lying to me?”

“I’m not—”

“You are. You’re lying about this and other things.”

From the corner of his eye, that door opened wider.

Stay there!

He issued the command in his head, not looking but feeling his girlfriend’s anger.

“Yasamin.” He used the name her parents had given her, plucking an authoritative chord. “I risked my life to save yours. Because you let me believe you were your sister, I almost got killed. I had to send you two off on your own, and you could’ve gotten killed. All of this”—he gestured to the room, the country, the days since their escape from the compound—“all of it happened because you lied to me.”

“Michael.” Leila’s tone was sharp.

He ignored her. “There’s something you’re not telling me, and I need to know what it is.”

“I am not…” Jasmine’s gaze flicked everywhere but at him. “It is nothing you need to know.”

“I need to know everything.”

“Michael!”

“Don’t.” He didn’t spare Leila a look. “Either be quiet or get out. Jasmine, you can tell me the truth, or you can tell interrogators at a black site. Do you understand that? You’ll be treated like a terrorist.”

“I am not a terrorist!”

“Michael, stop it.” Leila’s voice was loud and demanding.

“Jasmine, tell me what you’re hiding. What are they up to?”

“I don’t know! I don’t know anything! They never talked about anything when I was there. They didn’t trust me.” She slapped her hand over her mouth.

She’d probably vomit all over him, but he couldn’t stop now.
