“I’ll find a safe house.” Grant hugged Sam again, then squeezed Eliza’s shoulders. “Try to stay out of trouble.”

“Believe it or not, this is me trying.”

He chuckled. “Scary thought.”

Michael gave Sam a hug, then turned to her and opened his arms.

She barely knew the man but let him pull her close. When he did, he whispered in her ear. “I’m MC. Remember me.” And then he let her go. “Be safe, you two.”

Before she could respond or even think, Michael had climbed into the Porsche.

What in the world? Who was…?

Oh.

It was fuzzy, but the initials meant something. She wanted, needed to remember, but forcing memories didn’t work. She let the question shift to the back of her mind.

After the guys left, she and Sam headed inside, where they split up to save time. She grabbed the cheapest pajamas she could find, a sweater for the next day, and undergarments. Sam caught up with her in the health and beauty section, where they grabbed necessities.

“Sorry there’s so much. I’ll pay you back when—”

“Just get what you need,” he said. “Don’t worry about it.”

She couldn’t keep up with Sam’s moods. After he’d pulled her out of the trunk, he’d been tender. At the police station, he’d defended her. But before that, at the restaurant, his anger had shocked her. He’d been jealous.

Right now, he was abrupt.

But also generous, so she wouldn’t complain.

Back in the car, Sam attached his phone to Bluetooth, and she studied the map that came up on the screen. “We’re going to Boston?”

“Yup.” He backed out and headed for the exit. “That okay?”

“It’s just… I have a problem.”

His gaze swung to her, amusement at the corner of his lips. “Just the one?”

“Ha-ha.” But it wasn’t really a laughing matter. “I need to get to Denver.”

“I figured. That’s why we’re going to Boston. It’s time for you to tell me what’s going on.” Maybe he heard his demanding tone, because he added, “Please.”

That wasn’t what he most wanted to talk about, but she wasn’t ready to tell him about Levi. And this certainly wasn’t the place.

But before they could get into any of that…

“I have no ID.”

“Oh. Right. You’ve remembered a lot. Do you know what happened the night you showed up at my house?”

“Nope. Those last few days, maybe weeks, are still a blur. It’s like I’m remembering from the past forward. The closer we get to the present, the murkier it feels.”

MC—Michael—was still fuzzy.

How could she have had contact with Sam’s brother? It didn’t make sense.

“I’ve heard of people losing their wallets on vacation and explaining to the TSA agents what happened. They’ll let you on.”

“What if they have access to the information Jon got? He said there was no record of me anywhere in the last five years.”
