Her son!

Eliza had a child. Eliza had Jedediah Keller’s child?

Now she was hiding her face in the back seat, practically folding in on herself.

Sam should be kind. He should be patient and helpful and…

He needed out of that car. Just a minute to pull himself together. He reached for the door handle.

Michael grabbed his forearm, grip strong. He lifted his phone in his other hand, and Sam saw the note he’d typed. Write down the guy’s number.

A task. He could do that. He pulled a business card from his back pocket and jotted the phone number down.

Jed Keller spoke through the speaker. “You’ll come back to us by tomorrow.”

Michael was typing something into his phone furiously.

“Hopefully,” Keller continued, “if you haven’t made too big a mess of things, we’ll all be able to go home after that. Will we, Eliza? Or will we have to move on?”

“I…I don’t know.”

“Have you turned over evidence?”

She looked at Sam, then Michael, who was shaking his head.

“No. I haven’t turned anything over yet.”

“Good, good. Then I think we can salvage this and get things back to normal.”

Michael lifted his phone, and Sam leaned over to see what he was showing Eliza.

Where is he?

She shrugged, but he nodded to her to speak.

“I need to know where you are. I’m in…” At Michael’s nod, she said, “Denver. I’ll have to get a flight. Where should I go? Boston?”

“What are you doing in Denver?”

Michael shook his head.

“Doesn’t matter now,” she said. “Do you want to come here?”

Michael gave her a thumbs-up, but his focus was on his phone. Then, he looked at Sam, tapped the card he still held in his hand.

“You’ll need to come here,” Keller said.

Sam started to hand it over.

Michael shook his head, mouthed, Give me more.

Michael grabbed the business cards Sam held out, then took the pen out of his hand and started writing.

“Then you’ll need to tell me where.” Eliza’s voice sounded stronger.

Sam craned to see what his brother was writing.

“Fly into Manchester,” Keller said. “I’ll send someone to pick you up.”
