Before the first light of dawn breaks, I find myself rousing from the warmth of Colton’s embrace. I carefully slip out from his grip, ensuring I don’t wake him. Standing there for a moment, I admire the chiseled contours of his face, accentuated even in sleep. The urge to dive back under the covers with him is strong, but I remind myself of the day’s significance.

Last night may have been fun, but today everything changes. I don’t bother changing into my dress. Instead, I channel into my bedroom for a refreshing bath. Given the impending events of the day, I decide to dress more practically. I opt for fitted black tights, matching boots, and a dark tunic cinched at the waist with a black leather bodice. If I’m about to embrace my dark magic, I might as well look the part.

After tying my hair into a long, side-swept braid, I sit at my vanity, returning to the ritual of makeup application—a practice I’ve neglected recently. I emphasize my eyes with deep shadows, adding a flush of color to my cheeks and a dark hue to my lips.

I’m not entirely familiar with how Kaine has been managing this place, but since the four of us agreed to meet for breakfast, I venture toward the dining room, assuming that’s where the gathering would be. Upon entering, Drew sits at the table, fingers drumming impatiently. She looks impeccable, as always. I’m curious about her evening, particularly about the dancer she seemed interested in, but I bite back the question.

“Morning,” I greet. “Remember, no one specified a time for this breakfast.”

She waves a dismissive hand. “The kitchen’s prepared some dishes. Eat up before we head out.”

Nodding, I pick up a muffin as Nyx strides in wearing the same attire from last night. Drew’s eyebrow arches. “Interesting night?”

Nyx smirks, a twinkle in his eye. “You could say that.”

I can’t quite pinpoint the emotion bubbling within me. It’s not jealousy—more like a sense of relief. Soon after, Colton materializes beside me, having channeled directly into the room. With a swift motion, he shuts all entryways and then takes a seat, motioning for me to join him. As I sit, our hands find each other beneath the table—a silent reassurance.

Nyx, with his usual audacity, helps himself to a generous portion of bacon, not missing a beat. Between bites, he inquires, “Alright, who’s going to kickstart this briefing?”

Clearing her throat, Drew sits up straighter, ready to dive into the plan.

Drew outlines the plan, her voice steady, “You three are headed to the Brysta Trenches today. My ship will get you there swiftly. About an hour’s sail should bring you close enough to the Center Isles to channel. Once you retrieve the grimoire, the crew will transport you back to the Lamia Realm. I’ve arranged a safe location where the magic awakening can occur without endangering others.” She glances in my direction, eyes filled with an unspoken message.

“You’re not accompanying us?” I ask, surprised.

She shakes her head, “I have urgent matters to address. However, I’ll be there with you by nightfall.”

Nyx leans forward, his eyes narrowing. “You’re assembling the Luminary Council, aren’t you?” His tone is pointed.

There’s a palpable silence before Drew responds.

Nyx’s impatience surges. “I’m a fucking member of that council, Drew. It’s only fair Lyra and I are informed. This matter concerns her after all.”

Reluctantly, Drew nods. “I’ve initiated conversations with a few, including your parents, Colton.”

Colton’s brow furrows. “Invoking the council seems risky. What if things don’t go as planned?”

My gaze flits between them, apprehension growing. “The council’s convening is precautionary, in case I lose control and you’re forced to…what? Kill me?” My voice cracks.

Drew hesitates. “It’s more for your safeguarding.” I’m not convinced.

Fed up, I push away from the table. “Then let’s get this over with,” I declare, standing. “I have to find Lili and bid Chepi farewell. I doubt the trenches are an environment suitable for him.”

Drew nods in agreement. “It’s a wise decision.”

Colton’s fingers wrap around mine, “Once you’re done, find me,” he says.

I nod, eager to get this over with. This day has loomed over me for too long.

As I weave through the corridors toward the kitchen, I’m almost certain that’s where I’ll find Lili, likely spoiling Chepi with bacon strips and other delicious morsels. The aroma of sizzling food grows stronger with each step, and as I turn the bend the familiar scene of the duo at the kitchen island confirms my suspicions.

The sight prompts a sense of déjà vu, and I approach with a mix of urgency and hesitancy. “Lili, I’m sorry for asking again, but can you look after Chepi for me? It might be a day or two, maybe longer,” I request, my voice quivering slightly.

Lili’s face softens, her eyes filling with concern. “Of course, I’ll care for him. But you need to be careful. The last time you left him in my care...” The memory is unspoken but hauntingly clear in the air between us.

I gently place a hand on her arm, stopping her from saying more. The nightmares from that time already plague my sleep. I don’t need to hear the details now. “I’ll do my best to be safe,” I promise, even though a nagging voice inside me wonders if it’s a vow I can genuinely uphold.

Holding Chepi close, I feel the soft rhythm of his breathing and the comforting warmth of his small body. “Behave for Lili, squish. I’ll come back as soon as I can. I love you.” I plant soft kisses atop his furry head. Setting him down next to Lili, I offer him a strip of bacon as a parting treat.
