“Did you manage to take that bath I suggested? How are you feeling now?” Colton inquires, settling down next to me on the bed.
“I did, and I’m feeling much better. You were away for quite a while. Learn anything useful?” I ask, eager to know more.
“We did. And unfortunately we didn’t have to resort to any form of torture,” he reveals, a hint of regret in his tone. I find myself conflicted. While part of me wants her to pay for her actions, another part recognizes that she’s a small player in the grand scheme of things. Letting go might be the wiser choice...at least for now.
“Drew has a way of being an intimidating interrogator. Coupled with the looming threat of Nyx’s violent tendencies, Citlali was quick to spill what she knew,” he says, a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth.
“And? Do we know Samael’s location? Does he even possess my grimoire?” I press on, anxious for answers.
“I believe we’ve discerned his destination. First thing tomorrow, we’ll devise a plan and pursue him,” he declares.
“Why wait until tomorrow? We can prepare and strategize now,” I counter quickly.
“Because the upcoming days will be difficult. We need to track down your grimoire, handle Samael, and then determine how to awaken your dark magic,” he explains, a grin taking over his face.
“And...” I prompt, hungry for more information.
He leans in slightly. “We all felt that, tonight, you deserve some levity. Tomorrow’s challenges will be daunting enough. It’s time to do something fun. Drew’s joining, and I even extended an invitation to dear old Nikki.” His laughter fills the room.
“Where are we headed?” I ask, curious.
“Alchem Hollow,” he answers, his eyes shimmering with mischief. The village lies on the edge of the Black Forest. My memories of it are faint, limited to glimpses from a carriage when I was a child. The thought excites me.
“It’s almost ironic. One day, I could ascend as the queen of Cloudrum, yet I’m unfamiliar with the village closest to my home. While tales of Princess Lyra circulate, few could match the name to my face. How can I be expected to lead when most don’t truly know me or my values? And now with whispers of my dark magic…” I muse more to myself than to him.
Colton reaches out, gently cradling my face. “They’ll adore you, Lyra. But only if and when you decide the crown is what you truly want.”
“When do we head out?” I ask, swiftly rising from my seat, still draped in my bathrobe.
“As soon as you’re prepared. A servant guided us to our chambers, and we’re all adjacent to one another in the east wing. I’ll freshen up and change, then we can reconvene here once everyone is set. Does that work?”
“Sounds perfect,” I affirm with a smile. He gives me with a swift peck before making his exit.
The emptiness of my room feels strange without Chepi, but I move along to get ready. I brush through my hair, letting it fall naturally in loose waves. Skimming through my closet, my eyes settle on an emerald-green gown, reminiscent of Colton’s eyes. Sleeveless with a fitted bodice and a daring slit up one thigh, it’s a perfect choice. Slipping it on, I make minor adjustments in front of the mirror, pleased with the reflection staring back.
I head to the balcony and watch as the sun sets over the gardens and listen to the soft chirps of the birds. I find myself wishing I could invite Rhett along. Technically, I could channel to the Lycan Realm and attempt to reach him, but that feels like an overwhelming task. Besides, he likely has his own life and pack politics to navigate. I hope he’s well and that Aidan’s absence has improved things for them. Once I get a moment, I’m determined to pay him a visit.
If tonight is truly the last chance for fun before embarking on our quest to awaken my dark magic, then I’m determined to be carefree. For tonight, I’m granting myself permission to set aside everyone else’s concerns. I’ll prioritize my own desires and simply do as I wish.
A knock at the door disrupts my thoughts, sending a jolt of anticipation through me. When I swing the door open, I’m met with Nyx, immaculately dressed in black.
“Hi,” I greet, a hint of nervousness seeping into my voice, but I’m not sure why.
“May I come in?” he inquires, and I realize I’m inadvertently obstructing his way.
“Yes, of course.” I move aside quickly to grant him entry.
“You look beautiful,” he says, advancing further into my room and giving me an appreciative once-over.
“Thank you,” I reply, straightening up.
“Are you ready to visit the Center Isles tomorrow?” he inquires as he steps out onto the open balcony.
I follow him and ask, “Do you believe Samael is there? Why would he choose that location above all others? Colton didn’t mention that,” I respond, looking out toward the horizon. “He just said we’d discuss details tomorrow and that tonight should be about having fun.”
Nyx leans against the balcony railing, the cool night air tousling his hair. “The location has always been a touchy subject for Colton.”
I turn to him, my curiosity piqued. “Because of Z?”
