They exchange glances, silently deliberating. Finally, Rune speaks up, “Have you ever heard of the Center Isles?”
“Only a bit. I know it’s an island off the coast of the Noble Vale,” I respond.
“It’s a place few venture to because it’s both dangerous and uninhabitable,” Rune explains.
Rix chimes in, “But it’s also breathtakingly beautiful. The underwater cave system there, the Brysta Trenches, draws those with adventurous spirits. I’ve never been, but it’s said to be one of the most fantastical places in all of Nighthold.”
“Brysta for the goddess of the cosmos?” I ask.
“Yes, the underwater amphitheaters are supposed to be comparable to the constellations themselves,” Rix says.
“What’s so dangerous about it?”
Rune explains, “The isles themselves are treacherous. If one wishes to explore the caves, they must swim extensive distances underwater to reach the various underwater amphitheaters. Cave diving alone has its risks, but the primary danger of this location is its ability to neutralize all magic.”
I gasp. “A place that nullifies magic? Does it neutralize all magic only within the caves?”
“Yes,” Rune clarifies, “so explorers have to embark on this dangerous journey without the safety net of magic, particularly challenging given the depths underwater.”
I nod, processing the information, then ask, “So what exactly happened to Zaelinn there?”
Rune takes a deep breath, glancing to Rix. “Z... She was the love of Colton’s life. They were deeply in love, inseparable. But then, for reasons none of us could understand, she got drawn to Nyx.”
Rix cuts in. “Nyx, with his charm and title, enticed many. But he never truly loved any of them, not the way Colton loved Z.” Rune’s voice softens. “Colton was heartbroken. He wanted Z to be happy, and he might’ve forgiven King Onyx in time if it hadn’t been for that night.”
The two exchange a look before Rune continues, his voice dropping as if fearing someone might overhear. “Onyx and Zaelinn had been drinking and decided to visit the infamous Brysta Trenches. Maybe they were seeking romance or a quick thrill—no one knows. But Zaelinn drowned that night. Onyx couldn’t use magic to save her in time.”
“Oh gods... So Nyx is to blame?” I can feel a pang in my chest for them.
Rix hesitates. “It’s not as simple as that. But in Colton’s eyes, yes. He’s never forgiven Nyx for leading Zaelinn into that place. And Nyx, despite his numerous casual affairs, was profoundly affected by her death. He might not have loved her the way Colton did, but he’s lived with regret ever since.”
Rune nods in agreement. “The rift between them has deepened over the years. Nyx might appear nonchalant, but there’s undeniable guilt in his eyes whenever Zaelinn’s name comes up.”
I’m momentarily at a loss for words, stunned by the weight of their shared past. I had sensed that something had driven a wedge between them, but I hadn’t imagined it involved a woman they both cared for, nor her tragic end. My heart aches for Colton, understanding his animosity toward Nyx. Yet I can’t help but feel for Nyx too. The weight of his guilt, the loss of both a woman he cared for and a friendship, must be immense.
“How long ago did this happen?” I ask.
“Many years ago, maybe seventy,” Rune replies.
Hmm, that’s a very long time ago. I’m ashamed to admit that a feeling of jealousy begins to fester in my chest. Colton really did love another woman. I’m tempted to ask more about her, to know what she looked like, but perhaps it’s better I remain ignorant. This woman came between the two of them, and now I’ve been with both of them as well. It feels as if history is repeating itself, but in reverse. Gods…
“I’m not sure when Colton will be back. Is it safe to go explore the grounds?” I ask, craving some fresh air.
“Of course, no one will harm you here. While it might be a tad more perilous if you venture deep into the forest, the manicured gardens around here are entirely safe,” Rune assures.
“Would you like some company? Or is there anything else we can assist you with?” Rix inquires.
“I’m alright, but thank you.” I walk out of the kitchen, apple in hand, with Chepi trailing behind, having already devoured all his bacon. The backyard beckons, and I take a seat on one of the benches by the pool’s edge, entranced by the water’s reflections.
“So, the rumors are true,” a voice says from behind me, startling me. I turn and see a man with long, wavy brown hair and striking blue eyes that remind me of the Lycans, but he’s clearly Fae.
“Which rumors are those?” I ask, clutching my apple a bit tighter while Chepi hops onto my lap, eyeing the newcomer cautiously.
“Colton mentioned he had a lady staying with him, but I had my doubts. I’m Dorian, by the way,” he replies with a hint of amusement.
“You’ve spoken to Colton?” I press, curiosity piqued.
“Yes, I spoke with him a few minutes ago. That’s why I’m here,” he says while running his fingers over his beard.
