Thank you very much.

Tyler moved in the doorway, alerting me to his presence.

“I’ll go upstairs and tell everyone to hurry up. The cake looks really nice, Karen.”

Mom put on a bashful act, waving a hand dramatically at him.

“Oh, it was nothing. Tell Aurora that if she’s not down here in ten minutes, I’m coming up.”

Fuck, not good.

I could guarantee that Jensen was making up for the orgasms I didn’t have time to give her.

That was the last thing I needed Mom to see.

“Mom, it’s her birthday. If she wants a soak in the bath to pamper herself, let her.”

She glanced at me blankly for a moment, waiting for Tyler to leave before speaking again.

“Lukas, why haven’t you proposed to her yet? You two have been in love since you were children, so lock her down while you can. What if she changes her mind?”

She just had to stick her nose in everything and wreck my mood.

I snorted, clearing the bench to look busy.

“She’s literally turning eighteen today for starters, but we’ve only just started dating, Mom. Why rush?”

“Because she might change her mind,” she stated, not seeming to realize I’d ignored that comment on purpose.

I was always scared of losing her, but I was more afraid of her fucking dying on me.

She had a tendency to self-sabotage, and she’d all of a sudden become blood thirsty.

She was reckless, and that scared the absolute shit out of me.

“It isn’t the fifties anymore. People get divorced every day, and Rory would never stick around if she didn’t want to. That’s a shitty attempt of trapping her and you know it.”

She narrowed her eyes on me, not happy with my answer.

“Lukas James, we do not get divorced in this family.”

“I know that, but it’s my relationship and it’s new, so don’t go talking about marriage in front of her. It makes her uncomfortable. Hell, it makes me uncomfortable,” I said flatly, knowing she wasn’t going to let that shit go.

Rory

“I haven’t heard from you today. How was school?”

I glanced at Skeeter as I turned the taps off and took the towel from his hand.

“Slash and the guys stopped in,” I replied as I wrapped it around myself.

Cue the paranoia.

He frowned. “Without me? Why?”

“Why does Slash do anything? To cause a scene,” I shrugged, giggling as he grabbed my damp waist and tugged me against him, a serious look in his eyes.
