"Now who could that be?"
Before anyone could move, there was a loud knock, then another. I walked to the front door and opened it.
Simone was on the porch, looking flustered.
"Maci."
"What happened?"
"You haven't heard?"
"Heard what?"
Simone looked over her shoulder at the street.
"A florist just delivered the biggest arrangement I've ever seen to Camille's house."
I blinked, surprised.
"So?"
"So," she said more quietly. "There was another card."
My heart stayed calm.
"What did it say?"
"I don't know the exact words."
She shook her head slowly.
"But whatever it said, it scared her."
Bernice and Miss Evelyn came to stand with us at the door.
"What do you mean scared her?" Bernice asked.
"I've never seen Camille like that."
Simone crossed her arms.
"She opened the card and all the color left her face."
"Did somebody threaten her?" Miss Evelyn asked.
"I don't know."
"She wouldn't let anybody read it."
"She folded it up so fast."
Simone looked at each of us one by one.
"Then she called everybody over."
"Everybody?"
She nodded.
