He gave me a thumbs-up, then yelled, “Prospects, get to the Pres’s office. Now!”
“Fuck’s sake. Like a bunch of toddlers,” I muttered as Woe appeared in the doorway. I pointed at the trays. “Take these and get the hell out.”
He nodded. “Yes, Pres.” Picking them up, he disappeared, leaving me in blissful silence.
I spent the rest of the day catching up on paperwork, followed by a meeting with Blue about the next delivery.
By the time I fell into bed that night, I was fucking exhausted. I picked up the pillow that Juju had slept on, catching a faint whiff of her scent. I hadn’t changed the pillowcase, which on its own should have warned me that my goose was well and truly cooked when it came to that woman.
I was totally fucked.
CHAPTER 6
JUJU
“Hey, Ma.”
I looked up at Fin from the stocktake paperwork spread across my desk.
“Are we doing the delivery to the Kings on Friday?”
“Yeah, why? You got something on?”
“Kinda.” Fin leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms. “It’s the last weekend before school starts back. There’s a bonfire and party over at Old Man Ross’s field.”
Leaning back in my chair, I studied my son. Most kids either lied to their parents or didn’t bother telling them where they were going. I was grateful Fin always kept me informed. Mostly because he knew I wouldn’t stop him unless he gave me a damn good reason.
“You taking that girl?”
Fin shook his head. “Nah, you were right. I asked around. Total stalker. She’s moved on to someone else now. A guy from the next town over.”
“You warn him?”
“Yeah, but not sure he’ll listen.” He pulled off his cap and raked his hand through his dark hair. “So, is it okay if I stay? Or do you need me to come with you?”
I took my time answering.
Glacier and I had been texting on and off for the past two weeks. Nothing major. A few good morning and good night messages. Some funny memes. Easy conversation. He hadn’t mentioned me staying over again, and I hadn’t brought it up either.
But if he did… it would definitely be less awkward if Fin wasn’t there.
The last time had happened on impulse, and I sure as hell hadn’t expected it to go the way it had.
As open as Fin and I were with each other, there were still some things a son didn’t need to know about his mother.
Finally, I nodded. “Stay. Enjoy your last weekend. I’ll let you know what I’m doing. And you keep in touch with your grandpa.”
His face lit up with a blinding smile. “Thanks, Ma. I’ll let the guys know.”
He turned to leave.
“Fin.”
He paused and looked back at me.
Keeping my expression steady, I said, “Remember our talk. You be careful. You need anything? Condoms? Money?”
His cheeks flushed as he shook his head, his shoulders shaking with laughter.
