CHAPTER EIGHT

Jeremy

I was going back to the mainland for her. I didn’t care if I moved, or she did. I was over trying to live without her.

I realized I enjoyed my life up here, and had worked hard to build a home for myself in the tiny Alaskan town. But in reality, I’d been there less than a month before I went on vacation, and could cut ties at any time if I needed to.

We’d just gotten back from a fire at one of the local farms. It had been small and easily contained, but I was learning that the cold made things more difficult out here.

I was finally starting to feel my fingers and went to turn my phone back on. I’d learned to leave it in a pocket or warm location and to turn it off when possible to avoid the battery draining to nothing.

I took a sip of the hot coffee I’d made the crew, then suddenly Jordan came rushing in. I sighed. I could tell by the look on his face we weren’t done for the day.

“Plane crash. Supply plane heading here. Not sure what happened, but an SOS went out then it went down. We’re the closest rescue team and it looks like there’s smoke over the ridge. You ready?”

I nodded, a dark feeling in the pit of my stomach. Plane crashes could be gruesome.

We grabbed our gear and took off in the four wheel drive truck we had for the town.

My phone finally powered on and I heard the ding of a couple messages.

Decided to come to Alaska afterall.

My heart soared and I knew I loved this woman.

Booking a flight.

Couldn’t find one soon enough. Heading to private airport.

Suddenly I couldn’t breathe.

“Jordan, is there anything different about this plane?” I asked suddenly as the truck closed in around me.

“Not that I know of.”

Another text came in.

Taking off on private plane with Charlie. He said there was room!

My heart plummeted.

“Fuck.”

She was on the plane that had crashed.

“What?” Jordan asked, worried.

“Clary was on that plane.”

He accelerated as much as he safely could until we made it over the ridge and saw the small plane, pummeled by the trees, resting on the ground at an odd angle.

There were flames licking around one edge of the wreckage, and I could see supplies scattered everywhere.

“Clary!” I started screaming, as I ran toward the wreckage.

“Charlie!” I heard Jordan yelling, as he took in the scene.

“I’m going for the cockpit!” he yelled over to me. I nodded, then pointed toward the side door, indicating I was going to open it.
