CHAPTER TWO

Kellan

I knew that it was wrong of me to follow Serena without her knowing, but I just didn’t want to leave her by herself. I wished that she would confide in me, as both her boyfriend, her friend, and her daddy, but ever since she decided it was time to face her past, it was like she didn’t want to drag me along with it. Like I would be deterred or something by her facing her ex.

It irritated me more at the fact that she didn’t want me around while meeting him.

I didn’t even think about the fact that his wife was going to be there, but shouldn’t she want to show him that she has moved on to someone who makes her happy? That she no longer has feelings for him. These doubts, as much as I tried to push them away, continued to fill my mind because she had approached me in the beginning as an escort to make him jealous, and in turn ended up falling for me instead. What if she still has some feelings left towards him, and ends up wanting to get back with him?

What if I get left behind?

My jaw clenched as I tried to push away these jealous feelings, knowing that I was being a little irrational and to just trust her. The problem was that I did trust her, but I was still a little scared by her not wanting to involve me in these situations that I believe would be necessary for me to be there. I just hope that she doesn’t get upset with me when she learns where I am at.

I sat in the corner of the restaurant, out of view but I could clearly see Serena sitting at a table, waiting for them to show up. How I made it in here without her really noticing, I’m not sure, but I just needed to make sure that she was going to be okay. At least I would be there to help her if anything went south.

“Sir, what can I get for you?” The waiter murmured, walking up to me.

My stomach was protesting in hunger, so I figured I might as well eat while I’m here, “yeah, I’ll have a burger and fries.”

The waiter took my order, but in that moment that I had looked away, I noticed that a man and woman had sat down across from Serena. My jaw clenched as I saw no doubt Lazarus and Charlotte, seeing how they were both looking so wary of Serena who looked to be shifting uncomfortably in her seat. In that moment, I really wished that she had asked me to come with her, because I knew she was quite nervous.

While eating my dinner, I just watched as Serena conversed with the couple, barely touching the food on her plate. I knew that he had to be hungry since she hasn’t eaten anything since last night, and was too nervous this morning to want anything for breakfast. I could see the man glaring at her, like he didn’t give a damn what she was saying. The woman looked like she was a lot more friendlier, but the way he was gazing at Serena, I knew then that he had come here for a reason.

And I don’t think that it was a pleasant one.

I motioned over the waiter, handing him my card, “I’d like to pay now, and that table over there,” I motioned to where Serena sat, “I want to pay for their food and drinks.”

The waiter looked at me with confusion, but nodded his head, going to do exactly that. Since I was getting this settled, I decided enough was enough as I saw Serena’s shoulders slumping slightly at whatever Lazarus was saying to her, but I knew it wasn’t anything nice. I rose to my feet, striding across the restaurant with a purpose, my eyes only on my woman.

“Serena.” I murmured softly, reaching out to place my hand on her back, “come, let’s go.”

Serena’s head snapped up, and I saw the tears brimming in her eyes, “K-Kellan? What are you doing here?”

The waiter came over and gave me back my card which I promptly put in my pocket until I could take out my wallet. I gently pulled Serena to her feet, feeling how shaky she was as I wrapped my arm around her waist, keeping her close to me. I decided to remain pleasant, but I glared right at the man who made my woman cry.

“Only for the sake of our women I’m not going to drag you out of this booth and teach you a lesson for making her cry.” I stated firmly, seeing the fire light in his eyes as he glared right back at me, “I know what she had done to you and it was wrong, but she reached out to you so that she could apologize and move on with her life. I see you and your wife are a beautiful couple, and Serena would never try to get in the middle of that, but I’m not going to just stand back and watch you treat her like shit because of something that happened a long time ago.”

“How about you mind your own business?” Lazarus grumbled, putting his arm around his wife, “she knows exactly what I think of her, and it was her choice to come here knowing exactly how I was going to react. Do you honestly think I want my ex around my wife? I didn’t bring our child for this exact reason.”

Prick, I thought to myself.

“Then you should have politely declined her invitation.” I replied coldly, really wishing that I could just pop him in the mouth because of the disrespect, but I knew I just needed to remain calm because we were being watched, “all she wanted to do was apologize. Whether you accept it or not, I do not care, but we will be leaving now.”

I was going to walk away but the woman, Charlotte, rose to her feet, “wait.”

I didn’t want to, but Serena stopped, looking at her hesitantly, “yes?”

Charlotte hesitated for a moment, but spoke up, “listen, I do not know you very well. Lazarus has never really mentioned his exes, and I’m sure you had your reasons for what you did, but I do commend you for having the guts to come up and apologize face-to-face. A lot of times, people don’t care how they hurt others, and it is obvious that your boyfriend here cares about you a lot.” Charlotte chuckled slightly, like her thoughts amused her, “and it is obvious that you didn’t even realize he was here making sure you were okay. Lazarus is a little rough around the edges, but I’m sure he can find it in his heart to forgive you. Okay?”

Serena looked about ready to burst into tears once more, “thank you. I won’t contact either of you again. I just needed to say what I needed to.”

Lazarus rose to his feet, his jaw clenched, “I understand that you want forgiveness, Serena, but I can’t give that to you. Not after everything that has happened. But I do want you to move on in your life, and start a life with someone who will love you. Just… don’t break his heart as well.”

I felt Serena stiffen in my arms, like she didn’t know how to respond to what he had just said. I wanted to tell him off, but I decided that it wasn’t going to be worth it in this moment. Right now, I just need to take her away from here, and get her where she would feel most comfortable.

“Let’s go.” I told her softly, pulling her towards the restaurant entrance.

All Serena could do was look down at her feet like it was the most interesting thing in the world. I hated seeing her like this, like she had done something wrong by trying to apologize to him. To me, she is one of the strongest people that I know, because not everyone can face someone that they hurt.
