“Come inside,” he instructed, his voice calm and reassuring. “Chase is expecting you.” Not wanting to be a bother, I followed him into the house, leaving behind the handsomer man, who was making his way over to the warehouse at the far side of the dirt lot.

CHAPTER FOUR

Rafael

After Sandra had been taken out to the car by Richard, I quickly came to realize that Will was a huge threat to us all, her especially. Therefore, in order to make sure he didn’t come back for Sandra or any of us, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Forget what Chase had said about going legit and not causing trouble. It was clear that the only way Will would be able to pay the debt is by stealing from someone like Sandra.

As soon as she was gone, I searched the house, looking for anything that looked like it was her’s and worth taking. What angered me more was the fact that nothing she had was even remotely worth keeping. All her clothing was torn and plain, and I was hating the man more and more by the second.

I wasn’t entirely proud of going against protocol, but what I did needed to be done. Before leaving, I motioned for Patrick to step to the side, and he released Will as he did. As he rose to his feet, I seized him by the front of his shirt and pulled him close to me.

“If you ever show your face at the bars or anywhere near the bakery or the compound, I’ll personally put you six feet under ground and make sure no one ever finds your mangled body,” I hissed, keeping my voice low as I spoke. Will whimpered as he tried to pull away from me, but I held him in place as I continued. “You won’t look for her, talk to her, or even look at her. If she so much as mentions even having thought she saw you, I’ll do far worse to you than you did to her.”

I meant every word I had said, and I meant to make sure that he never bothered Sandra ever again. So, while Patrick and Richard took her to see Chase, I made my way over to the auto repair shop, where I knew Jake and Vincent were still working. Out of everyone in the King’s Knights, they were the ones who were having the worst time adjusting to our new way of life, so I knew they were the only ones I could count on to do this rather difficult task for me.

“There you two are,” I said as I entered the auto repair shop. From what I could tell, they were done with their work for the day, and they had been sitting in front of the TV, watching some ice hockey game. Jake, the older twin, smiled as he turned to look back at me.

“Hey, Boss,” he said, still calling me by my long forgotten title as the two of them rose to their feet. “Please tell us you have something for us to do other than fix vehicles and motorcycles. We’re dying of boredom.” Seeing the game on the TV, I couldn’t help but smile.

“Didn’t seem that way to me,” I retorted, unable to help but laugh as I spoke. “You both looked like you were having a hell of a time watching the game. Who’s winning?” Vincent waved a hand dismissively at me as he shook his head in response.

“We weren’t paying attention to any of that,” he informed me, a glimmer in his eye as he spoke. “We were watching the fights that broke out in the ring. This is the only sport we've ever watched where fights are encouraged." Seeing Jake nod in response, I laughed.

"I see," I began as I shook my head at them. "In that case, I suppose you're both too busy for the task I had for you, so I suppose I better leave you to it." Instantly intrigued, they both raced to stop me.

"We never said that," protested Jake as he smiled at me. "We only said that we were dying of boredom." Raising an eyebrow at them, I looked over at Vincent, who was nodding in agreement.

"Alright then," I agreed as I crossed my arms across my chest while staring the two of them down. "However, I need you to promise that no one will ever know about this. Not even Chase. Am I understood?" Immediately, both men nodded in agreement.

"It's about time," Jake said as he stared back at me. "We were wondering how serious you were about going legit. So, what's the job?" A smile spread across my face as I looked around, making sure no one unexpected was around.

Explaining what I wanted, I didn't go too deep into detail and kept the request short and sweet. Not that I ever had to go into detail with Jake and Vincent. They were the best hitmen I had ever come across, and they always seemed to know exactly what I wanted after only giving them a small amount of details. The more I left to their decision, the less likely they were to mess things up.

Both Jake and Vincent looked both confused and intrigued by my request, seeming more grateful to do what they did best rather than concerned about messing up the job. Not only had they always been my most loyal, but they were also the best at what they did. They were born for a life of crime, and they were masters. After I explained everything, Jake tilted his head to the side.

“So, you want us to do what we do?” he asked, seeming a bit confused as he spoke. “This isn’t a test or anything, is it?” Immediately, I shook my head in response.

“Of course not,” I reassured the two of them, taking note of how uneasy they both seemed by the situation. “Just do what you do best and collect the money. All I ask is you bring me the money so I can report to Chase, and the scumbag’s disappearance can be written off as a accident or suicide. No harm done to anyone.” Jake and Vincent exchanged looks, seeming a bit skeptical of the situation as they stood there, and I wondered just what was going through their minds.

It wasn’t a good sign when the two of them went quiet. It meant that they were sharing some unspoken understanding, and I didn’t like when they did this. It made it feel as though they were secretly plotting against me. After a while, Jake turned and nodded at me.

“Very well,” he agreed, his smile returning as he spoke to me. “We’ll take care of the scumbag and get Chase his money. However, we wish to hear you say that you won’t allow us to get in trouble under any circumstances.” Relieved, especially since I had always been true to my word, I nodded in response.

“Thank you,” I said as I pulled a small wad of cash out of my pocket. Tossing it to them, I continued. “Consider this as a down payment as well as reassurance for my silence. Just like old times…” Indeed, it was just like old times.

CHAPTER FIVE

Sandra

The following morning, when I finally woke up, a brief panic set over me, and I started to wonder if I had dreamt it all. Expecting the phone to be ringing next to my head to signify that Will was outraged and making sure I was up and cleaning the house, I frowned in confusion as I looked around the room. It was a simple tidy room with plain wallpaper and light furniture. If anything, it reminded me of those boarding rooms from the movies and TV shows based in the thirties to sixties.

The tiny clock on the nightstand next to my head indicated that it was currently eleven in the morning, and the panic threatened to wash over me once again. I still had to explain everything to Rebecca, and I still wanted to make sure I had my job. I wasn’t entirely sure if I needed to do anything else, but I knew I needed to check.

The night before, Chase, the leader of the Barbarians, had me brought to his office, and, after hearing what Patrick and Richard told him, he had offered me a chance to stay at the compound as long as I chose. According to him, the compound was meant for members of the motorcycle club as well as anyone who wasn’t officially part of the group yet worked for them. When I didn’t understand what he meant, he explained that the women were never considered part of the club, and, thanks to me working at the bakery with Rebecca, I was more than welcome to stay as long as I needed. Overall, it was clear that I wasn’t here against my will and could come and go as I pleased.

After seeing everything last night, the last thing I wanted was to go home to Will. If he was still there, he would have been absolutely furious that I had left, and I never would have been allowed out of the apartment again. Instead, when conversing with Chase, I asked what would be expected if I chose to stay here forever. So long as I helped hide the group, I was allowed to stay as long as I wanted.

Much to my surprise, when I got up, I found that someone had placed some freshly folded clothing on the dresser next to the bed. There was a note on the pile from Rebecca, and, after reading it, I realized that she wanted me to come see her at the bakery. Making a mental note to find Chase so that I could ask for a ride to the bakery, I gratefully accepted the clothing and made my way over to the fully stocked bathroom to take a shower.
