CHAPTER SEVEN

Megan

By the end of the work day, not only had I driven myself absolutely crazy baking up a storm in the kitchen, but I had come to learn more about Rebecca and Nathan than I ever expected. After lunch, Rebecca and Lydia returned to the dining room, leaving me alone once again with Nathan, who admitted that Rebecca was actually his niece. I couldn't believe that he was related to Rebecca, and it made things a bit awkward between us.

It wasn't necessarily the fact that he was her uncle that bothered me. Instead, I was more concerned about their relationship that they had before. While I didn't mind the age difference between Nathan and I, the fact that he was Rebecca's uncle made it seem inappropriate to try to be with him. So, when he tried getting close to me, I Immediately started to distance myself from him.

Over the next week, I only talk to him when I absolutely had to. The last thing I wanted to do was get involved with Rebecca's family members and make things awkward between Rebecca and I. She had been kind to me, and I didn't want to mess anything up between us.

Nathan didn't seem to mind at all. In fact, he seemed to be ignoring me as much as I was ignoring him, which, as much as I hated to admit it hurt at first, I understood that it was probably for the best. I didn't want him feeling hurt that I had been ignoring him as much as he had been ignoring me.

When my days off finally came, I spent all my time at home alone trying to recover from the hectic activity of the week. I had been driven absolutely crazy trying to ignore Nathan in order to maintain a proper relationship with each of my coworkers. However, once I was home alone, I realized just how lonely I had been and started to wonder if ignoring Nathan was in fact the best option.

While I spent most of the day trying to distract myself with the stuffed animals that I had as well as the movies that I like to watch, I couldn't help but think of Nathan. He was everything I dreamed of in a man, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was something I could have done in order to make things work between us without ruining my friendship with Rebecca. It wasn't until I received a call from an unknown number that I was able to distract myself from how upset I was.

"Hello?" I asked as soon as I answered the phone. Immediately, I recognized the voice on the other line.

"I was hoping you would answer," Rebecca said as she laughed through the phone. "I have a question for you." Raising an eyebrow, I looked at the time.

It was late enough in the afternoon on a Saturday that she shouldn't be calling me to see if I can come into work. If anything, she was actually closing the coffee shop soon. Genuinely curious as to what was going on, I shrugged.

"What is it?" I asked, my curiosity showing through as I spoke. She laughed as she responded.

"Sarah, Lydia, and I are going to be hanging out a little bit later today," she informed me. "Would you like to come and meet a few more of our friends that will be working at the coffee shop soon?" Relieved that she wasn't calling me into work, I thought for a second.

Perhaps meeting new people would distract me even more from the guilt I felt from ignoring Nathan the way I had. It had been a while since I had truly spent any time outside of home with anybody else, and I needed the social interaction. After considering this for a moment, I smiled and nodded in response, even though she couldn't see me through the phone.

"I would love to," I agreed. "Where should we meet up?" She didn't even hesitate as she spoke.

"I'll come pick you up," she offered. "Just text me your address, and I'll be over soon." Not seeing a problem with this, especially after how kind she had been to me, I nodded once again and hung up the phone.

As soon as I texted her the address, I made my way over to my bedroom in order to prepare for getting to spend time with Rebecca. It would be nice to get out of the house and not have to go to work or bother with anything like school. I hadn't really spent time with anybody outside of work or school since I was in high school, and, even then I never had any real friends, this would be the perfect opportunity to get to know people outside of work so that I could have an actual social life.

Less than ten minutes after she had called me, she messaged me to let her know that she was outside my apartment, and I immediately set out to meet her. Out in the parking lot, I saw a pickup waiting for me and started towards it. As I drew closer, the window rolled down, and Rebecca smiled down at me from the passenger side.

"Hey there," she said with a big smile, and she got down from the passenger seat in order to let me into the backseat. "How do you feel about going to see a movie? A bunch of us are wanting to go see this new Christmas cartoon playing in the theater completely." Caught off guard by the fact that they wanted to see a kids movie, I paused and looked at the driver's seat.

There sat Nathan, and I started to regret ever agreeing to come in the first place. If I had known Nathan was going to be there, I never would have agreed in the first place. Staring at him and shocking disbelief, I found myself completely lost for words for a moment. Taking my silence as a no, Rebecca tilted her head at me.

"Is there something else you would prefer to do?" she asked, and I turned to look at her, my train of thought broken.

"No," I replied immediately. "A movie sounds great." With that, I climbed into the vehicle, and we drove off while I wondered what I was going to do about Nathan.
