"So, what was all that about?" he asked as he stared at me. "Is what Denise said true?" I lowered my gaze and nodded in response.

"If you must know, I never did anything about it," I promised, knowing that Chase must be furious. "I would never hurt a hair on her head." Chase held up a hand, cutting me off.

"I'm going to send her away," he informed me, and my heart sank as I stared at him in shock and disbelief.

"You're what?" I asked, and he sighed and shook his head.

"Rebecca deserves a better life than she has," he told me. "She's too sweet and kind to be running around with the likes of us. Nothing is holding her here now that she's of age. Daniel made me swear I would protect her, and that's what I have to do. Between the police being warier of us now that Joyce went around snitching and the King's Knights still a prominent threat, the last thing I want is for Rebecca to get caught up in the middle of all this." I felt as though my heart was going to break.

"You can't send her away," I insisted. "This life is the only one she knows. She knows who we are and what we do. She would be hunted down as an accomplice, especially since Joyce hated her more than any of us." Chase shook his head at me.

"Not if she is in another state," he reminded me. "That's why I wanted to talk to you." Taking a deep breath, I shook my head. "We need to expand to different areas so that, if anything happens here, we have someplace to go. I want you to take her and several men to a new compound out of state and build a new compound. One far from Joyce and the King's Knights. One where we can start over. Adam and Sarah are due in three months, and they can't get caught in this. I want to start a family with Lydia, but as long as Raphael is waiting for his chance to collect the debt from Joyce, we could never, especially since the police are close by. Please, do this for me." I sighed as I looked down at the ground.

"So, you're not officially making Rebecca leave?" I asked, and he shrugged.

"It depends on her," he told me. "She deserves better than what we have to offer, and she needs a push. If she chooses to stay, she can, but we'll have to make her think that we've changed our ways and gone legit. It's the only way to ensure her safety. She can plead ignorance." I thought it over and realized he was right.

With Joyce able to pinpoint every single one of us, including Rebecca, no one was safe. It was only a matter of time before the police came looking for us, and it wasn't fair to have Rebecca caught in the middle of it. The only crime she had committed was being born the daughter of Daniel, our former leader. She was too sweet and kind to let this happen to her.

"So, where will you have us go?" I asked. "New York? Chicago?" He shook his head.

"You'll be going to Colorado," he informed me. "That way, you can hide in the open by living a seemingly normal life." I frowned in confusion.

"What's in Colorado?" I asked. Chase smiled.

"New opportunities and plenty of wide-open space," he promised. "No one would be able to locate us or tie any of the past to us. It would mean freedom for the whole group." I smiled and rubbed the back of my neck.

"That does sound perfect," I agreed as I thought it over. "So when would you have us leave?” He smiled as he spoke.

“In a week,” he told me, and I nodded.

“Who all is coming with us?” I asked, and Chase thought for a moment.

“Definitely Adam and Sarah,” he decided. “After all, Adam can start up a new shop, and Sarah would be safe from Joyce far from here. I’d rather her go with you and help set up the compound than put her in danger.” I nodded.

“That makes perfect sense,” I agreed. “I’ll take them and a few more people. Do you already have property out there? Or will it be my job to locate the property for the new compound?” Before Chase could answer, Adam came out to meet us.

“Hey, a few of the guys are wondering when we’re going to announce the winner of the costume contest,” he stated as he met up with us. “Should we have them wait a little while longer?” Chase shook his head as he waved at Adam.

“Have them wait just a little while longer,” Chase called out to him. “We’ll be in in a minute.” Adam nodded and headed back inside while Chase turned back towards me. “We’ll discuss the details later. Right now, we should go in and enjoy the party and the peace we’re experiencing now.” With that, he guided me towards the shop, and I knew I would have to figure out what I would say to Rebecca when she saw me again.

CHAPTER FIVE

Rebecca

“Do you promise you won’t leave me?” asked Sarah as she stared at me. “I don’t think I could do it without you. I’m scared.” I smiled and nodded as I hugged my friend.

In all honesty, I was just as scared as Sarah was. A few days after the Halloween party, Chase announced that we would be splitting up and some people would be moving out of state to start up a new compound for everyone. Sarah and Adam were both told they would go, and I was also selected to go along.

“I promise I’ll stay close by,” I reassured Sarah, who was currently on the verge of tears. “We don’t need you stressing out the baby, and it’s not fair to have you going out there all by yourself.” Sarah smiled and nodded as she hugged me back.

“That’s a huge relief to hear,” she said as she looked up at me. “Adam promises that everything is going to be okay and that we’ll be able to have a peaceful life at a fully legit shop.” Despite my current skepticism of the move, I refused to worry Sarah any more than she already was.

“And I’ll be coming with you to help with setting up the new shop,” I reassured her. “That also means that I’ll be able to help you prepare for the baby’s arrival.” She was about to respond when Adam and Russel came into the room, and Adam smiled when he saw her.

“There you are,” he said with a gentle smile. “I trust you got everything packed?” Sarah nodded as she smiled back at her Daddy.

“Almost,” she informed him. “I just have a few more things to pack into the car for the road trip tomorrow.” Adam nodded towards the suitcase she was holding.
