CHAPTER ONE

Rebecca

"I can't wait for Halloween," Lydia told Sarah as they sat down at the table. "I can't wait to see what Chase plans for the Halloween party in the shop." Sarah nodded in agreement.

"I can't wait, either," she replied as she reached for one of my freshly decorated Halloween cookies. "After Adam heard that there would be a costume party on top of it all, he went and picked out my outfit." Lydia raised an eyebrow at her as she, too, took a cookie.

"Don't tell me," she declared as she bit into the perfectly decorated pumpkin. "Let me guess. He decided you're a pumpkin?" Sarah laughed and nodded her head.

"Yes!" she confirmed before devouring the rest of her cookie. "Can you believe it? I already look big, thanks to the baby, but he decided that I need to look like a giant pumpkin!" As I transferred the cookies to the cooling rack, they both looked at me.

"What about you, Rebecca?" Lydia asked as she reached for another cookie. "What are you going to dress as for the costume party?" I thought for a moment before shaking my head.

"I haven't decided yet," I informed them. "I've been so busy preparing the treats and everything for the party that I haven't been able to decide." Sarah sighed and shook her head as she looked at the cookie plate I had been working on.

"I miss helping out at the shop," she complained as she studied one of the cookies. "Ever since I got pregnant, all Adam has me do is stay home and relax. I want to do something useful around the compound." I thought for a moment.

"Do you think he would protest you helping me make treats for the Halloween party?" I asked. "I still have a lot of work to do, and I'm starting to think that I won't be able to finish it all in time." Sarah and Lydia exchanged looks before breaking out in a smile.

"Sure," Sarah agreed. "I love making cookies." Lydia raised her hand in excitement.

"Can I help, too?" she requested. "I've never baked cookies or anything before, but I'm a fast learner." I nodded, eager to get all the help I could.

"Of course," I told them both. "Come on over here. Sarah can make the cookie dough balls to put in the oven, and Lydia can decorate the cookies as they finish cooling." Before long, we were finishing up the treats like a well oil machine when Adam and Chase both came into the kitchen.

Both men looked like they had been hard at work for hours, and they both looked exhausted. When they saw the three of us working together to get the cookies done, they looked both amazed and amused. After watching us for a few minutes, Chase shook his head.

"Looks like the treat section of the Halloween party is going to be memorable," he said as he looked at the party platters of cookies, cupcakes, and other treats we had made. "Lydia, did you ever decide what you wanted to be for the party? We have to hurry if we're going to get to the mall on time to get you your costume." Lydia stopped and thought for a moment.

"How about a black cat?" she asked before letting out a childish giggle. Chase nodded before looking at me.

"And you, Rebecca?" he asked, seeming genuinely curious. I thought for a moment.

"I want to be a superhero," I told him. "I'll be picking out my costume after I finish all the baking." Lydia stopped and looked me up and down.

"I could pick out the costume for you," she offered. "That way, you get a good costume and can finish getting the treats made." It sounded like a good idea, but I looked at Chase, who nodded in agreement before taking her up on her offer.

"That would be great," I decided. "If they still have it, I want to be Thor Girl." Lydia nodded in agreement before turning to Chase.

"Shall we go?" she asked, and the two of them left the room, leaving me alone with Sarah, Adam, and a ton of cooking to do.

"Sarah, we should get you to your appointment," Adam finally told her after what felt like forever. Sarah's lower lip quivered as she looked at him.

"Can't I stay a little while longer?" she asked. "It's been a while since I got to do anything like this." Adam shook his head.

"As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news," he began as he gave her a sympathetic smile, "we have to get going. We need to go to your checkup to make sure the baby is healthy."

She began washing the remains of the cookie dough from her hands. "I can't wait until he's born, though. You would not believe how the morning sickness and cravings are hitting me." As she dried her hands on the dishtowel, Adam walked around the counter to hug her.

"If it's any consolation," he said as he kissed her on the forehead, "you're taking it like a champ, and I'm very proud of you." He then looked up at me. "We'll be back later. If you still need help, Sarah can help you finish." I smiled and waved a hand in acknowledgment.

"Thanks, Adam," I told him. "Have fun." As soon as they were gone, I felt a heavy sense of loneliness wash over me as I continued my work.

I was different from all the girls on the compound. I never had a debt to work off or anything like Sarah or Lydia experienced when they came here. Instead, my father was one of the Barbarians, so I grew up around the other members. I had a crush on Hank at one point, but after what he tried to do to Sarah, he was no longer around.

Not that I ever stood a chance, anyways. I was short with a curvy figure, but I was plain and ordinary because of the role I had taken on here at the compound. I was the housekeeper, and I helped everyone live in a healthy and clean environment while they went about their daily lives. It was like being Cinderella, but I didn't have people constantly mistreating me and demanding that I do all this extra work. That had stopped when Joyce left, and her little group of misbehaved followers dispersed.

As much as I liked Sarah and Lydia, I couldn't help the jealousy that threatened to grow inside me. I hated myself for it, but I hated how lonely I always felt. I wanted someone that would love me and make me feel special, just like Chase did for Lydia. I wanted a family like what Sarah was starting with Adam. However, I had that sinking feeling that it was not to be.
