“I don’t have feelings for you,” I lied as I stared him down, a cold feeling gripping my heart as I spoke. His expression dropped as he stared at me.
“You don’t?” he asked, and I shook my head. “I have been your friend and ally ever since you arrived. I have been nothing but good to you. Please, tell me what I did wrong!” He shook me a little as he spoke, his voice growing desperate and urgent.
“Let her go at once!” shouted Chase as he stormed into the shop, heading straight towards us. Hank and a few other men followed him as Chase reached out towards us and pushed Adam away from me. “I warned you what would happen if you forced yourself on her.” Adam started to protest, and I shook my head.
“He didn’t force himself on me,” I reassured him, and everyone turned to look at me, their expressions surprised and expectant. “He was with Joyce up in the office, and I accidentally walked in on them. When I took off, he followed me, wanting to make sure I wouldn’t report him for messing around on the job.” I then stopped and looked at him. “He was just worried he might get kicked out of the shop for a while. Nothing else.” Chase looked from me to Adam and back, his expression full of skepticism as he looked at each of us.
“Is this true?” he asked as he finally turned his full attention towards Adam. “Was that the only reason you were yelling at her?” Adam's eyes locked on mine, and I prayed that, for his sake, he would accept my assistance and spare himself Chase's wrath. After a brief moment, he finally nodded.
"Yes, it is," he agreed, and I felt relief washing over me. "I'm sorry, Chase. I should have not taken advantage of your offer to allow me to continue working in the shop, despite my wrist." Chase still looked skeptical as he watched us both before finally shaking his head.
"Adam, I think it would be better if you waited until after your cast is off before you return to work," he finally decided as he looked at Adam. "That way you aren't distracting or hindering anyone else from their work." With that, he turned to me. "As for you, I recommend you get back to work. You still have a bit of work to do before you work off your debt. Any further incidents, and I'll have you working off your debts by other means." With that, he looked back at Adam. "Come with me. We have a lot to talk about."
CHAPTER SIX
Adam
"So, tell me the truth," Chase said as he sat down on the couch in the main house. "What is the problem?" I frowned as I stared down my old friend.
"I'm not sure what you mean," I told him, keeping a calm head on my shoulders. Rather than believing me, Chase burst out laughing.
"Everyone fucks around while on the job, Adam," he reminded me. "That's why we allow women to roam around in our midst here at the compound. You think there are any women capable of anything but cooking, cleaning, and fucking?" I frowned as I watched him closely.
"Sarah is capable of more than that," I protested. "She's been more competent than Hank in the shop since my accident, and she's been keeping up with the orders better than I expected." Chase sighed and nodded in agreement.
"True," he agreed. "As much as I wish she would have agreed to alternative means, I'll admit that it's actually better to have her in the shop than Hank. In all honesty, after you get that cast off, I think I might keep her in the shop after all." Confusion washed over me as I watched him.
"What do you mean?" I asked. "I thought that you planned to have her work in the shop the whole time, not only until I got better." He shook his head as he smiled grimly at me.
"No," he admitted. "I planned to allow her to work in the shop until after you got better. After that, it would have been either pay the remaining balance or work it off in other ways." He shrugged as he got to his feet. "In all honesty, if she agreed to be mine, I would consider the debt paid in full." Patting me on the shoulder, he made his way over to the kitchen and pulled a beer from the fridge while I stared at him in shock and disbelief.
Chase was known for not treating his old lady very well, and there had been occasions where his treatment had brought the police to our doors, nearly putting all of us and our work at risk of discovery. The idea of Sarah being at his mercy made me sick to my stomach, and I felt my stomach knot as I attempted to process this. As long as Sarah proved useful in the shop, she was safe from men like Chase in our gang. If for any reason she slacked off or didn't get her work done, I knew Chase would leap at the opportunity to sweep her into his room. After a few chugs of his beer, he stopped and looked at me.
"Want me to grab you one?" he asked, breaking my train of thought. Immediately, I shook my head in response.
"I can't," I informed him. "I have to stay away from it thanks to the meds they have me on for the pain." Shrugging, Chase took his beer and sat down at the table, and I continued. "So, what if someone offered to pay off her debt for her?" Chase frowned as he considered this.
"I suppose it would be between her and her supporter how she repaid them," he pointed out, "but I would leave her alone. At least as far as money goes, that is. Other than that, I might consider pursuing a more personal relationship with her if she would allow me." My breath hitched as I considered this.
Maybe I could protect Sarah from Chase after all. If I have enough money to pay off her debts before she landed in that situation, Chase would no longer have any ammo to hold against her, and she could go back to a normal life. I didn't care any more if I stood a chance with her. Anything, even a life I wasn't apart of, was far better for the both of us than letting her become Chase's. He was manipulative and cruel, and he had no respect for women. Unable to contain my curiosity, I sat down across from him.
"Exactly how much does she owe?" I asked, and he thought for a moment.
"So far, she's made me approximately ten thousand dollars thanks to her work in the shop," he calculated as he stared blankly at his beer, lost in thought. "If you take into account her share of groceries and utilities, I would guess that she has paid off approximately nine thousand, putting her debt at approximately forty-six thousand dollars." My heart sank as I stared at him.
Forty-six thousand to release her from Chase's grip seemed like a hefty price, but it would be well worth it, especially if I could win her over in the end. However, since I wasn't working right now, it would take me a while to earn everything so I could pay it off for her. Unless I managed to convince the bank to releasing some funding from my investment accounts, which currently held about one hundred thousand dollars thanks to the interest it had earned over the last ten years, it would take me at least a month to repay her debt. After that, I wouldn't ask for anything else from her. I would send her back to town with enough money to restart her life, and I would go back to my dull, loveless life. That is if Chase didn't kick me out due to losing Sarah.
"What if I paid it off?" I asked, and Chase stared at me.
"You?" he asked, sounding amazed at the idea. "Why would you want to pay off her debt? You don't owe her anything." When I didn't respond right away, the realization dawned on him, and he nodded his head. "Ah, I see now. You have a thing for her." I started to protest, but he shook his head. "Don't worry. I'm not angry, nor do I blame you. After all, she is quite pretty. If anything, I think you have great taste." Leaning forward, he stared me down. "In all honesty, I highly doubt she would be properly appreciative of the gesture, but you are welcome to try. However, as your friend, I want you to consider all your options. After all, I have no idea if she could ever repay you for your kindness and support either financially or emotionally. So, before I accept your help, I must know something… If she doesn't reciprocate your feelings towards her, are you still going to consider it worth the financial risk, knowing full well that it'll be between you and her how and when she repays you if at all?" I steeled my heart and nerves as I nodded my head.
"Yes," I told him, my confidence holding my decision firm both in my mind and my heart. "I'm sure." After watching me for any form of hesitation, he finally nodded.
"Alright then," he agreed. "Because I owe you a decent amount of money for your work before the accident, I'll make you a deal. If you can pay me thirty-five thousand, I'll consider her debt paid. However, if you change your mind, let me know, and I will have her finish her debt off in the shop as agreed." He then offered me his left hand, accomodating for my broke wrist on my right. "Do we have a deal?" After considering this, I nodded and took his hand in my only good hand before giving it an awkward shake.
"Deal," I told him.
