“No recording.”
“No.”
“And the footage?”
“Not in that box.”
He gives a quiet laugh.
“Piper.”
It isn’t a question.
I say nothing.
His smile widens.
“Of course. This has her fingerprints all over it. You never had the imagination for something like this.”
There was a time that sentence would have bothered me.
Today it doesn’t.
“You’re right.”
That makes his smile disappear.
Roman studies me.
“I imagine you think you’ve accomplished something.”
“You used a master code that hasn’t been issued or documented in eleven years.”
“You identified Jonah’s authorization number without being told what it meant. You entered a restricted archive under a false premise and attempted to remove evidence connected to an extortion scheme and Jonah Reed’s death.”
“I picked up a drive.”
“You picked up the exact drive you believed contained evidence connecting you to Jonah Reed.”
Roman’s eyes stay on mine.
“That proves very little.”
“By itself?”
I nod.
“Very little.”
I reach behind me and place a thin file on the table.
His eyes drop to it.
Just once.
That’s enough.
“The safe house,” I say.
