I only ask:

“After it left your office?”

Roman realizes the mistake immediately.

His expression hardens.

Piper’s voice comes through my earpiece, barely above a whisper.

“Got him.”

I keep my eyes on Roman.

He knows we’re recording now.

He knows it doesn’t matter.

“Jonah was going to destroy everything,” Roman says.

The warmth is gone from his voice.

For the first time since I met him at twenty-three, Roman Vasseur isn’t speaking to me like a disappointed father.

He’s speaking to me like an adversary.

“He found transactions he didn’t understand. He was frightened. Unstable.”

Roman sees it.

Of course he does.

He steps closer.

“I did not tell anyone to shoot him, Dominic.”

Every muscle in my body goes still.

There are sentences you spend twelve years imagining hearing.

You expect them to feel larger when they finally arrive.

This one doesn’t.

It feels almost ordinary.
