I smirked. “Your Beta is not as stealthy as he thinks he is.”
Klaus smirked. “Not something we train.”
I clicked my tongue. “I know. You’re not good at it either.”
He gave me a soft smile, and it gave me a little hope that he would be okay.
Chapter 21 - Klaus
I missed Aubrey. She would come to visit me every day, and the times she wasn’t here, I felt like I was a caged animal slowly losing its sanity. She helped. I hated to admit it, but she helped. I found myself looking forward to when she would arrive because my mind wasn’t so harsh.
I stared out the window, taking in the calmness outside. I could hear the workers outside the hallway, the beeping of the machines. There was talk sometimes. Whispers about what was going on and if I was getting any better.
I tried to sleep, but that wasn’t any better. My mind was constantly going, and the dark thoughts only got worse when I shut my eyes.
I’d dream that I was getting free and hurting people. Members of my pack didn’t stand a chance against me. Blood covered my clothes and went down my hands. Innocent people who deserved so much better. But the worst ones were me finding Aubrey. Some of them were me hunting her in the woods and catching up to her.
Others were me going home and raping her. My animal side did not seem to know whether it wanted to fuck her or kill her. I hated how my mind was twisting things, and I couldn’t make it stop.
I hated it. I would never lay a finger on her in the wrong way, but my mind wouldn’t stop picturing it. All the different ways I could make her cry, hear her whimper in pain, begging me to stop.
There was a soft knock, and the door opened. I could smell her right away as she took a step inside. She always stayed by the door, but I could see she wanted to come further in.
I turned to her, taking in the tight jeans and the loose shirt. She had her hair pulled up in a messy bun. She looked like she hadn’t slept, circles starting to form under her eyes.
“Hi.” She leaned against the door. “Did you sleep well?”
I shook my head. “Not really.”
“Me neither. Cal kept me up.”
I ground my teeth together. The sudden thought of Cal putting his hands on her filled my head. The thought of him fucking her was even worse.
My nostrils flared, and I tried to take a breath. I knew Cal. He would never. And Aubrey would never. At least, I think she wouldn’t. But that didn’t stop my head from picturing them in my bed, entangled in the sheets. Her whimpering his name while he took her from behind.
I knew what Aubrey looked like when she was shattering apart, and now I was picturing it with him. Her body limp while he held her, his lips kissing her neck. Her smiling at him while she ground her hips.
“Klaus.” Her voice was soft, yanking me back. “He snores. I could hear him through the walls of your bedroom. I was up all night. I even tried to drown him out with the TV, but it’s like he has sonic volume.”
I paused at her words. “My bedroom?”
She nodded, her lips curled up. “It smells like you. It helps me sleep.”
My shoulders relaxed a little. I leaned back, pressing my back firmly against the wall. I focused on her words.
“Your Beta takes your words very seriously. He’s like a dog that follows me everywhere.”
“I want to make sure you’re safe.”
“I am safe. Even when I’m around you.”
I opened my eyes and stared at her. She leaned against the doorway, her head tilted to the side.
“You’re not safe with me, Aubrey. If you were, I wouldn’t be in here chained to the ground.”
“You are chained to the ground as a precaution.”
“Do you know the damage I could do if I weren’t in here? What goes through my head?”
