"Agreed," I said, and then, because the record should hold it: "I would not survive many more nights of the frost."

"I know," he said. "I read the windows on my way in. Whole house. You want to know the state of things? That's the state of things: I'm still angry, I'll be angry for a while, it's mine and I'm keeping it. And I'm here. Both are true. The bond can carry both; we tested that extensively, in stereo, the hard way."

That was the whole of the peace. No absolution was sought and none was issued; the kettle went back on; he took the good chair without being offered it. Two men in a cold kitchen, deciding. It is the only treaty I have ever signed that I believe in.

"One last entry," he said. "The eleven letters."

This was the room, and the room was true now. "I want Thomas."

He counted once, without the spaces, because he is himself. "That fits."

Wren came at nine, before Rosalind, with Neave a gray shape at the gate behind her, and she did not come in.

She stood in the doorway with the morning fog behind her and took from her case a single sheet under the seal that does not exist, and under a second seal beside it, smaller, which I had not seen before and understood immediately, because I have spent my life reading paper: hers. Her counter-seal, on the office's document, binding the messenger to the message.

"It came back by return," she said. "The office has never in my service answered by return. I am required to deliver it in person, read it aloud, and record that both parties heard it. Both parties are present. I am recording."

She read without inflection, which was its own mercy, or its own verdict, and I copy the sentences entire, because we are held by them now.

It is determined that the station continues. The question remitted for study is concluded, study being answered by realization. The pair registered to the Ashgrave station will be presented at the winter rite and opened into the account, entire. The proceedings will be entered as an accident of plant. Use will be made.

"Entire," Thomas said, from beside me. "Define entire."

"Both," Wren said. "The word is doing its work in the third sentence, Dr. Mercer. Both of you, opened, at the rite, into the account. I wrote studied. The office put it to the six chairs, and studied lost the vote." She returned the sheet to its case with hands that were perfectly level. "The margin is not recorded. Margins never are."

"And your counter-seal," I said.

"Is how the office keeps its messengers." She looked at me then, over the spectacles, one professional to another at the end of a long audit. "The rite is twenty-four days out, Headmaster. I am instructed to attend. I am instructed to bring the case." A pause, one beat, exactly. "I am sorry the second instruction was necessary. That sentence is not in my report."

She went down the path with Neave falling in behind her, and the fog took them both at the gate, and I closed the door on the following silence and stood with my hand still on it.

"Say the mechanism," Thomas said quietly, behind me. "The whole of it. I want the fork on the table where I can see it."

I said it to the door, because that was the direction I could manage.

"If we attend and comply, the working opens the bond and drains it into the account until there is nothing left to drain. Two husks, entered as an accident of plant. Filed, tidied, mourned on a schedule. If we run, or fight, or fail to appear, the office forecloses. It does not chase; it has never needed to chase. The station closes, and closure is a general audit: every mind on this ground that has ever brushed the hidden layer is wiped level, and the brushing is not a scalpel. Leah Brandt lost a reason and said thank you. An audit loses the year entire. June Alvarez. Wes Ferro. Elena Vasquez, who has been lied to all term for the crime of being loved by an insider. Rosalind. Croft. Every student who ever whispered the word tithe, every porter who ever razored a page on orders. The college is burned as an institution, charter, accreditation, name, and the office is patient and thorough and has done it before, and the officer is done first, and thanks them. That is the fork. The school, or the man. I have known the shape of that choice was coming since the night I put my palm on your chest, and I will tell you what I have never entered anywhere: there is a third paper I could put before them. One asset, entire, in place of two, delivered voluntarily, in exchange for—"

"Wrong list."

I turned around. He had the notebook out, and the gray box under his hand, and his face was the one from the seminar rooms, the one his students would follow out of a burning building.

"Wrong list. Item one: your Circle's been starving the thing for years and cooking the books. Item two: we fed it in one night for free. Item three: we don't run. We walk in and we prove it."

The officer in me, who has audited every plan ever put before him, stood there and audited that one, and found it made of exactly two materials: the truth, and us.

"Prove it with what," I said, because every plan I have ever audited was a list of instruments.

"With the ledger, which shows the theft. With their own strip of paper, which shows the surplus, four hours wide, price column empty; Wren sent the number up, they've already read it, it's in their books, they can't unread their own instrument. And with the demonstration." He put his hand flat on the table, palm down, the gesture of a man laying the last card face up. "Them opening us is a harvest, and a harvest starves the thing slower. Us opening us is Friday night. They watched the needle. Now we make every chair in that cellar watch it move."

Twenty-four days. Forty candles. The room below the chapel walk that has been dressed once already this term, and the stamp that has never lost, and six masked chairs who have voted, and the last argument on earth I ever expected to carry down those stairs: that two men, willing, are worth more alive than rendered, and that we can prove it in the only currency the office has ever accepted, which is a reading on an instrument that does not know how to exaggerate.

"Then we attend," I said, and heard the sentence enter the record of the term like a stone going into a well. "Not as the stock. As the audit."

He looked at me across the cold kitchen for a long moment, and behind his sternum, where I live now, the pilot light stood up into an actual flame.

"There he is," Thomas said. "Item four. Drainage."
