I sat there until a tractor went by and the driver slowed to see if I needed help, and I waved him on, and the wave used up everything I had, and then I drove through the fog line and back into my college, and the hedges went gray, and I noticed I'd stopped breathing through my nose the way you do at the door of a hospital room.
I left the keys and a full tank with the porter for Ballard. After I parked the Rover, Croft came out of the gatehouse and tucked a note under its wiper, his broad, right-slanting hand, the final strokes falling clean away from the words: Hope she behaved. Coffee in the record room Monday, if you're back in time. I stood in the north lot in the dark with my eyes caught on the last line, and I am not ashamed to log that a man saying if you're back in time, like my time was mine, nearly took my knees.
Then I climbed to my rooms and opened the notebook to a fresh page, past the anomalies, past the things that are actually happening, and I gave the page a new heading, and my hand was shaking and I let it shake, because a steady hand would have been a lie in the record.
What it costs.
Entry one: Micah Vane, twenty-six. Everything he was is gone, and the body keeps going, and someone folds his hands, and at ten to four his face still keeps the appointment. The college files this under "transferred."
I used to keep two lists. Anomalies, for the puzzle. Things that are actually happening, for the truth. Tonight there are three, and the third one isn't a puzzle and isn't a mystery; it's a bill, and somebody is running it up, and the page has one entry and room underneath.
The room underneath is what scares me.
Chapter 14
Adrian
The office answered the shortfall on Monday. The answer came under the seal that does not exist, one page and an annex, and the first word of it was Granted, although I had asked for nothing. I read it standing, because I did not want it sitting at my desk with me.
The office's documents have a grammar with no first person in it anywhere: things are decided, things are noted, use is made. The page in my hands had three operative clauses, and I enter them in their own words, because paraphrase would be a mercy and this record does not extend mercies.
The assessment is amended. Sittings will be held at the doubled rate until the shortfall is retired.
The interval is not to be consulted.
Eligibility is expanded in accordance with the schedule annexed.
The first clause is arithmetic, and it is arithmetic the way a cellar staircase is architecture. The doubled rate. Rosalind schedules the difficult interviews a fortnight apart because I have told her a man needs a fortnight to be worth interviewing, and the truth under the lie is worse and narrower, and now the truth is to be run at twice its speed until a column somewhere reads zero.
The second clause repeals the only sentence of doctrine I have never once broken. Take the weight as it lifts, never faster. The third rubric, the whole of what makes the small room a room and not an abattoir with a kettle, struck in seven words, in the passive voice, no author anywhere on the page.
The third clause I read once.
I know the definition it amends. Every officer knows it; it is the fence around the whole field; it has stood since 1871, and it decides, in fourteen plain words, who may be asked to sit. The amendment is in the annex. There was an annex. I did not turn the page.
I am not going to write what the expansion admits. I caught my mind beginning the count of heads the new fence would enclose, and I stopped the count by hand, the way one stops a clock in a house where somebody has died. The page wanted to arrive. I declined delivery. It is the first document of my career that I have refused to finish reading, and I record it here: the refusing felt exactly like the moment on a ladder when a man looks down.
I locked the page and its unturned annex in the right-hand drawer, on top of the schedule I do not consult and under nothing, because nothing in that drawer outranks it now. Then I did the one calculation the morning still owed. A remonstrance invites an answer. The office's answers arrive the way its questions arrive, under seal, in consequence of, and the last document I received that began with those words cost this college an inspector. I do not know the price of a refusal because in twenty-six years I have never bought one. I was about to learn the market.
Rosalind had seen the envelope come in. There was soup at one, unasked, and a fire laid in the study by two, which is her way of saying she knows the difference between correspondence and weather.

On Tuesday at four o'clock the review met, because the review meets.
I had thought of cancelling and could not construct the sentence that would explain it to the inspector, so at one minute past four the door opened on the usual minute of spent lateness, and for an hour a man sat across my desk with ink on his second finger and argued for his students against my margins, and the page with three clauses lay in the locked drawer at my right knee, eighteen inches from him, the whole hour.
He wore the blue shirt, which my private tables give at one week in three, and he was quieter than his average. He watched me more than his average; I keep the statistics; the statistics were disturbed. He did not mention the china, and I did not test it. There are readings a man takes once. Twice he began a sentence with no committee behind it, and twice he rerouted it somewhere procedural, and I let him, because I have my own bridge crew and my own spans I do not finish. Whatever he carried into that room, he carried it the way I carry mine, which is to say correctly, which is to say alone, and the hour ran its length with both of us lying in a companionable, disciplined way that I have no right to find restful, and do.
At five he stood, and at the door he stopped, and said, not looking back, "You'd tell me if the walls were thinner than usual this week. Right?"
"The walls are as they have always been," I said, which is the kind of sentence I keep for exactly these purposes, true in every direction and useful in none, and he tapped the doorframe twice with two fingers, some private rhythm of his, and went.
The drawer at my knee did not get thinner all hour. I checked.

I wrote the remonstrance that night.
