That hurt. Tears pricked the back of my eyes, but I wasn’t going to cry in front of him.

“Maybe you should try looking in the mirror,” I said, trying to break his grasp.

“Why? I haven’t changed. You’re the one that cheated on me,” he said, and I froze. There it was, all my fears punched me in the face as my mind scrambled with panic.

“I didn’t cheat on you,” I said softly, not daring to be overheard.

“I know about you and Alex, he had the decency to apologize,” he whispered harshly. I didn’t need to see his face to know he was angry. How much did he know? Whatever it was, it would be whatever truth Alex spun. I shook my head, even though he couldn’t see it.

“That’s what you believe,” I asked, feeling deflated as so many little pieces fell into place in my mind.

“Did you or did you not have sex with Alex,” he asked. I closed my eyes as the tears I’d held back trickled down my cheeks. “Answer me,” he demanded, shaking me, but there was no point in agreeing or denying. No matter what answer I gave, the result would be the same. He would still blame me.

Cal released my arms, but the emotional attack felt like he pushed me through the wall.

“Fine, don’t say anything. It tells me more than if you tried to lie to me. I don’t care if you did anymore, but if you’re going to stay here, then stay the fuck away from the rest of my friends,” he snarled.

I jumped as the door suddenly slammed open with a bang. Cal marched out, and I covered my mouth to stifle the sob that wanted to break free.

CALLUM

Why do I feel bad?

I dropped down on the couch, and no one other than Tyler noticed my mood. If they did, they didn’t say.

“Did you patch things up or make them worse,” he asked, and I glared at him. “Ah, worse.”

“Shut the fuck up and play,” I said, not picking up my controller. I stared at the NHL game onscreen and ignored the cheering as the guys in blue scored. I didn’t even know who was who because my mind was still in the washroom with Skye. I shouldn’t feel bad. So why the fuck did that feel horrible?

I’d finally said what had been eating at me for the last three years, and Skye now knew that I knew. I should’ve been relieved and breathing deeply, but no, I felt…bad. Crossing my arms, I ground my teeth and glanced at Alex across the room. He was smiling and laughing along with everyone else, like he wasn’t the reason I was no longer with Skye.

It took us a long time to get our friendship back on track after I confronted him and told him what I’d seen. He explained what happened and apologized for getting so drunk and high that he didn’t even know who he was fucking. He said he didn’t even know how he ended up in the bedroom with Skye in the first place. I didn’t realize until this moment how much anger I was still holding towards him. What they did that night at Tyler’s birthday party ruined our relationship.

I looked at my phone. It had been twenty minutes since I left Skye in the washroom, and I was tempted to see if she was alright, which fucked with my head. Again, why did I care if she cried? Let her cry. She should cry. My knee bounced as more time passed, and just when I was at my breaking point, she walked into the living room with her head held high and looking like nothing was wrong.

She didn’t say a word as she stuffed her feet into her boots and tied them up. “Where are you going,” I asked, but Skye didn’t even look at me. She grabbed her coat off the hook and put it on, and I stood. “Skye, where the hell are you going?”

Skye glanced my way as she opened the door and pulled her traveling suitcase outside into the storm. With a slam, the door shut, and I cursed. The guys were all staring up at me.

“What?”

“Are you not going after her,” Tyler asked.

I flopped down on the couch. “Why should I? She’s the one that decided to go back out into that.” I held my hand towards the window and the blizzard, but fear pierced my chest. If she got hurt…

“Fine, fuck it, I’ll go talk to her. Stop staring at me like that,” I growled at Tyler as I jumped up. I could see the lights of her car and was surprised that the old thing had started again. I jammed my feet into my boots and pulled on my jacket before stomping out the door. I pulled the toque and gloves from my pocket, swearing across the deck and down to the parking area.

I reached the last step just as she pulled out and drove around the parking loop, heading for the mouth of the driveway.

“Skye! Stop!”

She didn’t listen, even though I could tell that there was no way she was making it through the drift that had accumulated. The wind had picked up and piled the snow right at the mouth of the exit. My truck would barely make it through, let alone her little car.

“Skye!” I cupped my hands and yelled louder, trying to get her attention, but she revved the engine, her tires spinning as she rammed into the large drift. Just as I thought, it got stuck, and I stomped over to her driver-side door.

“Shut it off,” I said, knocking on the window, and was almost hit with the door as she opened it.
