“Fuck,” I swore, and shook my hand out.

Abel stumbled back from the blow, and not wasting a second, I came at him again, but he blocked the shot and shoved me hard. His hand felt like I was being hit by a small bus, driving the air from my lungs. My hands wrapped around his wrist with the knife as he drove me backward into the wall, and I screamed as the shards of glass sliced through my socked feet.

I saw the fist coming and moved my head out of the way so that he only grazed my jaw before slamming his fist into the wall with a loud cracking noise.

“Bitch, fucking bitch.”

Abel pulled the hand with the knife forward and brought me with him, and I screamed again as the glass dug deeper into my feet. I needed to pull myself together and force myself to focus. He slammed me against the wall again, but this time when he pulled forward, I used it as an opportunity to drive my knee up into his dick.

His eyes bugged out, and his upper body went slack. I drove my knee up a second time and caught him in the side before giving him a hard shove. Abel stumbled back and fell over the ottoman. His hand with the knife smacked into one of the two television screens, cracking the screen because the knife speared into it.

Abel moaned, his head falling to the side as I limped toward the kitchen. Each step was excruciating, but I needed my phone to call Cain, and I needed another weapon. I reached the knife block first and pulled out the longest knife I could before looking for my phone. I realized I’d left it upstairs.

“Ahhhhh,” I yelled as I was tackled from behind and driven to the ground. Again, the air was pushed out of my lungs on impact, and the knife flew out of my hand, sliding under the oven. I drove my elbows back, hitting any part of his body I could, and landed a few solid blows against his ribs.

“Fuck! Fuck you bitch,” he snarled as he fisted my hair and smacked my face off the floor. White spots exploded in front of my eyes, and I went limp in his hold.

“I was just going to kill you, but not anymore. Now you’re going to experience the full Abel treatment.”

His weight lifted, and I immediately rolled onto my back and began kicking at him even though the glass hurt me with every blow. “You’re like a back-alley cat, but I’ve slit their scratching throats too,” he said as he started to walk, dragging me by the hair.

Screaming, I tried to get on my knees, but he’d jerk hard as soon as I tried, and I was thrown off balance again, my ass finding the floor. I heard the lock for the basement door and began to struggle harder as terror shot down to my toes, giving me a boost of adrenaline.

“Stop fucking fighting, would you,” Abel roared and slammed my face off the closest wall.

I lunged for his leg like a rabid dog and bit as hard as possible until I tasted blood. His yell of pain gave me a burst of gratification until his fist found the side of my face, and stars lit up my sight again. My limbs went weak, and my brain couldn’t seem to remember why I was struggling in the first place.

Small whimpers left my mouth with each painful bounce as Abel drug me down the stairs like I was nothing more than a bag of garbage. Fear lanced my heart, but I still couldn’t make my limbs work properly and ended up moving like a wiggling worm on the end of a hook.

“Don’t do this, Abel,” I mumbled as he tossed me on the metal table. “Cain loves you…don’t ruin that.”

“He’ll love me more for this,” he said and went to tie my hand down.

“No, let go,” I yanked my hand away, caught Abel in the chest with my foot, and then screamed loud as the glass bit into the arch, sending sharp shooting pain up my leg.

“Ow, you cunt, you cut me,” Abel snarled, and I took the opportunity to roll off the table but landed hard on the cold floor.

“Cain,” I screamed, begging him to hear me wherever he was as Abel walked around the table. My body shook as I pushed myself back along the floor, leaving red streaks from my bleeding feet.

“He won’t want you anymore without your pretty eyes. I’m going to pluck them first.”

Tears flowed down my cheeks in steady streams as the song “You Are My Sunshine” began to play in my head.

CAIN

It was a slow day. I’d been moving around from one road to another and listening to the scanner for any possible jobs, but it seemed like no one was out today. Two cars still needed tires, and the oil changed back at the shop. It didn’t pay as much, but I’d be able to get in a mid-day fuck session with my Sunshine, which made it worth heading home early.

She hadn’t wanted me to go to work today, and she’d been very fucking tempting as she stood in just a T-shirt when she handed me my coffee. The schedule I kept as regular as clockwork almost went out the window after I kissed her lips.

I pulled up to the gates, punched in the code, and then rubbed my eyes as I waited for them to open. Abel was next on my list of things to do. Abel needed to feel wanted, or he would slip off the imaginary choker chain I had around his neck.

Pulling up to the front of the house, I expected Sunshine to come out and greet me like she’d done all week, but the door stayed quiet, and nervous energy settled in my body. Jogging up the steps, I noticed only the screen door was shut, but the house was quiet. Too quiet.

Had she taken off? Did she decide she didn’t want this life with me after all?

The screen door slammed as I whipped it open and ran inside. I skidded to a stop in front of the living room and stared at the damage. I zeroed in on Abel’s knife sticking out of the television screen.

I should’ve killed him, was all I could think as I ran through the hall and spotted the small pool of blood by the door leading to the basement. I was going to kill him if he’d hurt her. Abel would end up tasting my blade. A feeling I’d never experienced settled in my stomach as I ran down the stairs and across the basement to the closed door of my work area.
