"From?"
"Blackwell Technologies."
The mug pauses halfway to my mouth.
"Blackwell?"
"That's what I said."
I set the mug down carefully, wondering if I've somehow misheard her.
"They called the magazine?"
"They did."
"Voluntarily?"
"Believe it or not."
I let out a quiet laugh, shaking my head.
"That's almost suspicious."
"It crossed my mind."
Blackwell Technologies isn't simply another Fortune 500 company. They're one of those corporations so deeply woven into everyday life that most people never stop to think about how much depends on them. Their software powers hospitals, financial institutions, airports, governments, communication networks, and businesses across the globe. Whether someone recognizes the Blackwell name or not, chances are they've interacted with one of the company's systems before finishing their first cup of coffee.
For decades, they've maintained an almost mythical level of privacy. The company dominates headlines. The family rarely does.
"What happened?" I ask.
"The company's fortieth anniversary is coming up."
"I know."
"They've decided they want a comprehensive feature."
I frown.
"As in..."
"As in unrestricted access."
I blink.
"I'm sorry, could you repeat that?"
Grace laughs softly.
"I knew you'd ask me to."
"Did you say unrestricted?" I ask again.
"I did,” Grace responds.
"That can't possibly mean what it sounds like." I say, still processing the news.
"It means they're opening the doors," she explains.
