I look at her.

For the first time all evening, there is no anger in her face. Only exhaustion.

“I think we should slow down,” I say quietly.

“Take some time and figure out what’s really going on with us.”

Camille shakes her head.

“Julian, time is the problem.”

I hold her gaze as she reaches for her left hand and slides the ring from her finger. The movement is so simple that it takes me a second to understand what she is doing. Camille sets the ring on the coffee table beside the untouched glass of wine.

“I’ll make this easier for you,” she says.

“I don’t want to marry you, Julian.”

Something heavy settles in my chest.

“Camille—”

“—I’m not trying to punish you.”

“I know,” I say.

“I’m not leaving because you did something terrible.”

“I know that too,” I reply.

She looks at me for a moment.

“That almost makes this harder.”

I glance down at the ring. Three years reduced to a piece of platinum sitting between two wineglasses.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

Camille’s eyes fill, but she does not look away.

“So am I.”

I step toward her, uncertain for the first time all night about whether touching her would comfort her or make this worse.

Camille makes the decision for both of us by closing the distance and wrapping her arms around me. I hold her. There is grief in it, but no desperation.

When she pulls back, she wipes beneath one eye and takes a slow breath.

“I’m going to stay with Hannah tonight.”

“You don’t have to leave.”

“I know.”

“I can go somewhere else.”

“No.” Camille shakes her head.

“I want to go.”
