The word lands with more force than if she had raised her voice.

I look at her. “I’m here.”

“You’re physically here.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No, what isn’t fair is pretending I only started noticing this last week.”

I go still.

Camille folds her hands in her lap.

“This has been happening for months. Longer, if I’m being honest. We postpone the wedding. We move appointments. We keep saying we’ll make time when things slow down, except things never slow down because there is always another reason not to deal with whatever is actually wrong.”

“I don’t think anything is wrong with us that can’t be fixed.”

Camille watches me carefully.

“You really believe that?”

“I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t.”

She nods once, but the sadness in her face remains.

“I think you do believe it,” she says.

“I think you believe every problem has a solution if you organize it properly enough.”

I exhale and look toward the folder on the table.

“Then let’s start there. I’ll call Lydia Monday. We’ll reschedule everything we missed, clear a weekend, and actually finish making the decisions.”

Camille closes her eyes briefly.

When she opens them again, I already know I have answered the wrong question.

“This isn’t about Lydia,” she says.

I lean forward, resting my forearms against my knees.

“Then tell me what it’s about.”

Camille studies me for several seconds before answering.

“It’s about the fact that I’ve known for a long time that something between us isn’t working, and I think I’ve finally stopped pretending another wedding appointment is going to fix it.”

Camille settles back against the sofa, but her eyes stay on me.

“I’ve spent too long waiting for you to become fully present in this relationship.”

I frown. “I am present.”

“You’re dependable,” Camille says.

“You’re loyal. You’re generous with your time when something matters, and you’ve never made me question whether I could count on you. But that isn’t the same thing.”

“What is missing?”
