She nods.
“Then we understand each other.”
“For the purposes of the assignment.”
Her eyes hold mine for half a second longer.
“For the purposes of the assignment,” Sophie repeats.
Over the next twenty minutes, she has just finished outlining the first set of executive interviews when my phone vibrates across the desk.
I glance at the screen.
Camille.
The sight of her name cuts cleanly through whatever has been building in the room. I straighten slightly and reach for the phone.
“Excuse me.”
Sophie closes her notebook without comment.
“Of course.”
I stand and move toward the windows before answering.
“Hi.”
Camille’s voice is warm but distracted.
“I’m sorry. I know you’re working. I just wanted to confirm dinner tonight because Lydia moved our call to 7:30.”
I look out over Manhattan.
“I remember.”
There is a short pause.
“Good,” Camille says.
“I’ll see you at home.”
“I’ll be there.”
“All right. Love you.”
“I love you too.”
I end the call and remain facing the windows for another second before turning back.
Sophie has reopened her notebook. Her expression is composed, her posture straight, and whatever I thought I saw in her face before the interruption is gone. I return to my desk and sit.
“You were saying?”
“I think we’ve covered enough for today,” Sophie replies. Her tone is polite, but there is a new firmness beneath it.
“I have meetings with Elena and the archive team this afternoon.”
I look at the schedule beside me.
