“They don’t.”
“I know that. They don’t.”
I almost smile.
Tamara opens the first folder.
“Adrian called from Singapore.”
“What time is it there?”
“Late enough that he sounded annoyed that you weren’t available.”
“That narrows nothing down.”
Tamara ignores that.
“He wants you before your 11:30. He says the Asia-Pacific expansion discussion changed after the meeting in Hong Kong.”
Adrian has spent most of the week moving between Singapore and Hong Kong, handling a strategic partnership tied to Blackwell’s cloud infrastructure business. He remains Co-CEO, but our roles have sharpened over the years. I spend more of my time at the chairman level now—capital, technology, acquisitions, long-range direction—while Adrian handles more of the company’s global strategy, partnerships, and outward-facing operations.
He is still better with people.
I am still better when the room needs an answer.
Between us, it works.
“Put him through when he calls again,” I tell Tamara.
“He asked me to tell you he plans to keep calling until you answer.”
“That sounds like him.”
Tamara closes the folder.
“Your California team also wants confirmation on next week. San Jose Tuesday, Palo Alto Wednesday, then the advanced systems site Thursday.”
“I’ll confirm.”
“You said that yesterday.”
“I’m confirming now.”
“No, you’re telling me that you intend to confirm.”
I look at her.
Tamara looks back.
“Fine,” I say. “Confirmed.”
“Thank you.”
She makes the change on the tablet without any visible satisfaction, which somehow makes it worse.
My phone vibrates against the table.
