“How do we do that? His attacks were random.”
“Not all of them.”
Jay was shaking his head no. I almost stopped to ask him what was wrong when Larson cut off my thoughts. “You weren’t random.”
“Oh.”
Jay slammed a fist against the counter and walked away from me.
“I’m not asking you to risk yourself, though.”
“I’ll do it.”
Jay spun around and shot me a look so threatening I was surprised my legs didn’t cave. “No, Mac.”
“I figured you would want to, but Mckayla, you need to think about this. Don’t make a decision now.”
“I want to catch him.”
“Me too. I’ll be in touch.”
We hung up and I waited for Jay to speak.
I didn’t have to wait long for him to lose it. “No! Mckayla, have you completely lost your mind? You can’t put yourself into another dangerous situation!”
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “He can’t get away with it. I know you heard Detective Larson. He’s worried if they won’t get him before school’s out.”
“You’re not responsible for catching him!”
“No, but I can help.”
The front door slammed and we stopped when footsteps came toward us. Aubrey walked into the kitchen with a smile on her face that quickly disappeared.
“What’s going on?”
I tried to smile at her but one look at Jay, and I knew I was about to get ganged up on.
“Your cousin here thinks she’s a superhero or something.”
The urge to roll my eyes was strong, but I fought it back.
Aubrey looked between us, confused.
“Detective Larson called just now.”
She nodded. “Did they do the interviews?”
“Yeah, but they don’t have any leads.”
Her eyebrows scrunched together. “Really? So what are they going to do?”
“Huh.” Jay smirked at me. “Notice how she said ‘they’, Mac? Not what are you going to do. No, what are they going to do. The police. The trained professionals that face this every day.”
Aubrey looked at Jay like he’d lost his mind, but he continued before she could ask questions.
“You see, Aubrey, Mac thinks that she needs to sacrifice herself to find out who it is.”
Aubrey turned her attention to me. “What does that mean?”
