“He lost it. I mean, I’ve seen him angry and passionate but never like that.”
She went to the nearest couch and sat before patting the spot next to her. That little bit of direction was enough to make me snap out of my shock.
“He thought I tried to get him kicked off the team.”
“That’s what he implied.”
That made no sense. “Why would I do that?”
She shrugged. “He seemed to think it was some sort of diabolical plan four years in the making.”
As if I had the time or energy for something so devious and petty.
“He looked so betrayed.” My heart, the one that was supposed to be protected and frozen from him, cracked.
Whatever happened cut deep.
“Any ideas of who could have done it then?” Lo asked.
“Done what? We still don’t even know that much.”
“Maybe call Haley?”
That was a decent idea. If he was headed her way next, she should have a heads up. I found my phone mixed up in a throw blanket.
“Hi, Kennedy.” Haley’s voice was too chipper to have faced off with Ethan yet.
“Have you seen or heard from Ethan since practice?”
“No, did you need him?”
I shifted, bringing my feet up onto the cushion. “No. I’m calling to warn you.”
“About what?” Her voice dropped.
“He’s on a warpath. He practically smashed in my door and started yelling at me about betraying him and almost getting kicked off the team. He thinks I said something—I’m not exactly sure what—to someone on the team. Or maybe a coach? I have no idea what’s going on. He screamed then stormed out.”
“Oh no.” That didn’t sound comforting.
“What is it?”
“I’m so sorry. I never thought you would get dragged into this. I’m not even sure why he thought it had anything to do with you.” She sighed. “Hold on, let me put you on speaker.”
“Reid, come here,” she said. “Kennedy’s on. Ethan went to her apartment and flipped out. He thinks she’s the one that went to the coaches.”
My head snapped to Lo and I quickly put my phone on speaker so she could follow along. I didn’t want to have to repeat this to her.
“Oh no, Kennedy. I’m so sorry. I thought I’d be able to catch him before he left, but he just disappeared.”
“Yeah and showed up here,” Lo whispered.
I waved my hand to shush her. “What is going on, guys?”
“We went to the coaches,” Haley admitted, sounding resigned. “We’re worried about him, and after the incident at Shawn’s house, we realized we needed help. Actually, Ethan needs the help, but we haven’t been able to convince him to get it, so we decided to go to someone Ethan couldn’t refuse.”
Lo and I locked eyes. She knew about the night I stayed at Shawn’s with Ethan. About him drinking. How that broke the team’s number one rule.
“You guys turned him in?” I couldn’t believe it. That level of betrayal was unthinkable. No wonder he was out of his mind.
