“And? What did he say?”
“He sounded a little freaked out.”
A pause. “Oh no.”
“Yeah.” I sighed.
“Did you tell him you have feelings for him?”
“Yeah, I did.”
“And?”
I laughed at the repetition.
“He kind of avoided it. I mean I didn’t say I love you or anything like that.”
“Okay, so you didn’t say it directly.”
“Not really.”
“Hmm. He hasn’t talked to you since?”
“Nothing.”
“Hmm.”
“Not very encouraging, Soph.” When I got to the shop only Skylar’s car was in the parking lot. I hoped she hadn’t been alone too long. “Hey, I just got to work and I need to head in. I’ll let you know if I hear from him.”
“Okay. I’m sure he’ll call you soon.”
“I hope so.”
“Bye, girl.”
I hung up and took a breath before getting out of my car and hurrying to the backroom. It was empty, so I went to the front where Skylar was talking to the only customer. Since there wasn’t anyone waiting, I went to the back and started on the orders.
The orders weren’t enough to distract me. I focused in class so I didn’t have time to think about Liam at school, or practice, but now? Now I had all of the time in the world to fixate on my blank phone screen.
Anytime now. He could call at any time.
I stared at my phone for a moment, willing it to light up. Nothing. He was probably at rehearsal anyway. Before I completely lost my mind, I grabbed my phone and flipped it over. For the next hour, I worked through orders as fast as I could just to see if I could break my record. I was three orders shy when the door swung open.
A grinning Skylar peeked her head in. “Hey! You were so quiet back here I didn’t even realize you were here.”
I finished the arrangement I was working on and walked it to the fridge. “I’m now two orders away from my record for an hour.”
She laughed and leaned against the doorframe. “Good thing I came back then. I can’t have you breaking mine too.”
I narrowed my eyes at her, even more determined now. Her record was three arrangements more than mine, so it was feasible if she would just go away so I could focus.
“Sorry to break you from your incredibly important work, but there’s a customer out here that asked to talk to the owner.”
“Really?” I wiped my hands off on my apron and walked to the back door. Mom’s car still wasn’t there.
“She’s out on deliveries again. Should I tell him to come back later?”
I bit my lip. I could go out there and try to placate the customer but what if he was someone important. Oh crap. I looked down and cringed. My apron was longer than my cheer shorts so it looked like I had no pants on from the front. My hair was in a sweaty bun. I didn’t necessarily give off a professional vibe right now.
