Liam didn’t seem entirely freaked out last night. It could have gone much worse but he wasn’t entirely on board either. Understandable.

I had dropped a bomb on him, but I was running out of time. Less than a week was left now.

Fine!

I picked up my phone to nothing. No messages or calls.

I dropped it to the ground and rolled over in bed. Maybe I could fake sick. Mom would understand. Right? They let Ellie take a few days off to throw a pity party when Dallin left her.

“April! Why aren’t you up?”

I fell back asleep somehow. Okay. I knew exactly how but I couldn’t ignore my mom, who was glowering over me.

“I’m sick?”

“No, you’re not.”

“I’m heartsick.”

Her expression changed immediately, and she sat down, forcing me to scoot over.

“What happened, sweetie?”

“I talked to Liam last night.”

“Oh?”

“I told him everything.”

“Oh.” She sounded concerned this time.

“He didn’t take it that well.”

“Oh no.”

“He said he would call me later.”

“Hmm.”

“He hasn’t.”

She sighed and rubbed my arm. “Give him time. Did he seem freaked out?”

“Pretty much.”

She shook her head and sighed again. “I don’t know why you and Elise have had such hard times with this. Your dad just rolled with it.”

That wasn’t the whole story of what my dad told Dallin. But I didn’t tell my mom that.

“It’s a lot to take in. Especially since we only had a week together.”

“I’m sorry, April. I can’t imagine going through this on top of everything else you have going on but you need to go to school. You missed too much with the trip.”

Ugh. She was right.

“Fine.”

“If you want the day off from work, I’m sure we can make it work.”
