Sky’s car was in its normal spot when I pulled in, but I didn’t see my mom’s. Oh crap. If she wasn’t here, I would probably need to work the front. Oh, well. The smell of the flowers would probably mask the smell of my sweaty clothes. And hair. And body.

There wasn’t anyone in the backroom when I came in so I set down my bag and peeked through the door to the front. I didn’t see any customers so I went out looking for Sky.

“Hey!” I called.

She was wiping down a glass display, and she nearly fell over.

“Geez, April. A little warning next time.”

“Didn’t you hear the door swing?”

“Obviously not.” She stood up and rearranged the greeting cards while I went to the cash wrap. There was usually candy hidden in one of the drawers.

“Middle row of the right drawers.”

“Thanks.” I found them and tossed one to her.

“So, what’s the latest?”

This was going to require more chocolate. I pulled out another and popped it in my mouth before replying. “I texted him.”

“Yes, I know.”

“He didn’t reply last night.”

She stayed quiet and waited.

“I left my phone at home today.”

“Why?”

“Because I was going crazy checking it, so I decided to wait until I got home.”

“Masochist.”

I shrugged. “Either way I was going to lose my mind. This just prevented me from responding the second he texts me. If he does.”

“He will.”

I wasn’t going to argue with her. “So, where’s my mom?”

“The afternoon delivery boy quit, so she’s having to take over his route until we can find a new one.”

“That sucks.”

She nodded. “Austin wasn’t exactly the ideal employee. He missed at least a shift a week and was always late. Your mom told him he needed to improve or he was fired, so he quit.”

Huh. I hadn’t noticed how bad things were with him. Yet another reason Sky was meant to work here while I was meant to go far away.

“We’re going to have to hire another driver soon. With the holidays coming we both need to be in the back making orders. Your mom needs to be out here.”

It seemed she was talking more to herself than me.

“I’ll be in the back if you need me.”

She wouldn’t. She could probably run the entire store on her own.

Since I was alone, I turned on music and cranked through the orders. Anytime my mind started to wander, I started singing along. Thinking wasn’t something I wanted to do right now. If only I could turn off my brain and run on autopilot.
