I groaned internally. No, but he was one of those. Someone who judged before understanding the situation.

“Actually, I’m gluten intolerant. She’s been really great so far finding places I can eat at.”

There was a pause, and I rolled my eyes. Yeah, you stuck your foot in your mouth.

“Oh, sorry. You’ll have to tell me more about that later.” He could count on that. “What did you guys have planned today?”

Now I was confused. He said they would come up with something. I hated awkward situations almost as much as I hated people making assumptions about things they knew nothing about.

“Um…we don’t really have set plans yet.” Who knew a simple phone conversation could feel so awkward?

“Perfect. Eli and I were talking last night about what we should show you guys, so I’m excited you guys don’t have plans already.”

I sucked in a breath. Why didn’t he start with that?

“Sounds good. Where should we meet?”

Sophia perked up and leaned forward. I narrowed my eyes at her and turned slightly so she didn’t have a chance to overhear. She was pouting when I looked back, and I stuck out my tongue.

“Take the E train to the end of the line. We’ll be waiting.”

Uh. I assumed that would make sense to Sophia. “Okay, we should be done in just a few then we’ll head that way.”

“Perfect. Bye.”

“Bye.” I ended the call and stared at the screen.

Sophia looked like a sad puppy.

“You want to know?”

She nodded slowly.

“Are you going to keep making fun of me?”

She continued nodding even after I shot her an evil eye.

“Well, at least you’re honest.”

“All he said was to take the E train until the end of the line.”

“Okay.” She stood and gathered her garbage while I did the same.

“Okay? Do you know what that is?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to tell me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

She shrugged. “Cause I know something you don’t know.”

I chuckled. “Why do I put up with you?”

“Cause if you didn’t, you’d be stuck with ol’ Greg wandering around the zoo.”
