I smiled. “That was before.”

“Before?” he asked.

“When I thought life was a fairytale.”

“What is it now?” He was frowning.

“It’s messy and unpredictable and wonderful. You never know what the next moment might bring, so it’s important to appreciate what you have right now.”

He took a step closer. “So, you want to get married in their backyard?”

I laughed. “Not necessarily. I just understand why they chose to. They have the important part. They’re married. They’re bound together forever. The wedding is just fluff.”

“Good to know.” He put his arms around me and pulled me into him.

“That doesn’t mean I want to get married right now,” I warned him.

His smile never wavered. “Of course.”

I tilted my head back until he met my eyes. “I’m serious.”

“I know.” He kissed the top of my head, and I had a feeling he wasn’t really listening.

“Jason––”

“You don’t want to get married right now. I know, but that just means that it’s a possibility for the future, and I’m happy about that.” He waited for my reaction, and I finally nodded.

“Fine. Just don’t get any crazy ideas.”

“Thank you, guys, so much.” Brandon came into the kitchen wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

“No problem, Dad. I got you the honeymoon suite at The Grand.”

“That’s so nice! Thank you, Jason.” Sydney came around and gave him a hug before wrapping her arm around me. “And thank you again for being here. It really meant a lot to me.”

I squeezed her back. “I’m grateful you let me be a part of it.”

“We’ll see you guys tomorrow.” They both gave the twins kisses before grabbing their bags.

“Bye, Daddy! Bye, Mommy!” Finn called and Milo echoed.

They both froze in the doorway, and Sydney’s hand went to her heart. “Bye, boys. I love you both so much.”

Brandon kissed his wife’s temple, and they turned as the boys went back to munching on grapes.

“That was the sweetest moment ever,” I whispered.

Jason nodded. “One day we’ll hear that too.”

I sucked in a breath and faced him. “Promise?”

“I promise.” He bent down and kissed me briefly.

I never let myself think about having children. Not after how much it hurt to lose Alexander, but this time we would have each other. We could survive anything together, but right now, I just wanted to enjoy being with Jason again.
