When I reached for the water, not sure I wanted any alcohol in my system, she grabbed my wrist in a brutal, bruising grip, and eyed me closely.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” she repeated. “Don’t even think about it. I’ll help you when I can. Until then, you sit still.”

She was up and through the door without any other word, and I watched her go, feeling more hopeless and helpless than I had since I’d moved in with Knight.

Brock and Tink, dead. Knight potentially hurt as well. And me here, stuck and potentially forgotten.

Then I narrowed my eyes and reached for the Scotch. I unscrewed the lid, took a large swig, and forced it down, allowing the liquid to light a fire in my belly.

Forgotten my ass. Brock might be dead. Knight might be hurt. But I wasn’t willing to stay here any longer than I had to, and if I couldn’t count on anyone else to rescue me...

Well, I’d just have to find a way to rescue myself.

CHAPTER 5

KNIGHT

“FUCKING WEIRD TO BE back here, man,” Remy said, his eyes sweeping the space that used to be the front room of our clubhouse.

I mean, it still was. In theory. But it felt a whole lot less homey now. The place had obviously been swept by the cops, everything tossed and turned out. Our stuff was all over the floor, the drawers out, the doors of the cupboards hanging open. The walls had holes in them and every bottle of liquor in the bar was broken.

We were also missing around 75 percent of the people who belonged here. The place felt empty and unused, like we were in a building that had been abandoned for years.

I hated it. I’d put my heart and soul into this place, and seeing it now, like this, made me feel like someone had cut out part of my heart.

“You swept the place?” I asked Remy.

“Sure did. We’ve been through it three times and didn’t find anything. No bugs, no spies.”

“Bombs?”

He huffed. “None of those either, that we can see. And if they were here and waiting for someone to come through the door, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now.”

It didn’t make me feel completely safe here—too many of our enemies had had access to the place—but it was the best I was going to get for right now. And we needed our home base. Too many of my men were still spread out, and when they came back, they’d be coming to this building.

I needed to be here for them to come home to.

I slid into a chair at the one table that wasn’t broken and looked up at Remy and Frank. “Right. Then let’s get down to business. We know we’ve got three clubs on our side, and we know the Hell Hounds are at least considering not getting involved. Two other clubs to try to contact. What are our steps after that?”

We needed to figure that out, because when things started moving, they were going to move fast. Right now, Devil had no idea what we were doing. He probably thought he’d won. He’d had most of my men arrested and had kidnapped my girl. Killed two of my best men. Left me without many resources.

He probably thought I was going to go quietly into the night, my tail between my legs and leaving a trail of tears behind me.

Well, he had another thing coming. I wasn’t even close to giving up. But I wanted to make sure that when we moved, we’d beat him.

I wanted to be sure that I’d get in there, kill every member of the Steed in my path, and get Saraya back out again. Because if we attacked and failed, he’d take it out on her.

I wanted her back yesterday, so bad my skin was itching with it. I couldn’t sleep without her, could hardly breathe with her gone. But I wasn’t willing to rush if it meant selling her life for the sake of our failure.

I had to get this right.

Remy sat down and was just opening his mouth to answer me when the door behind him opened. I looked up, wondering who the hell thought they could interrupt this meeting, and saw, to my surprise, Gemini.

I jumped up and ran to him, my arms out. I hadn’t realized he was out of the hospital yet, but he looked terrible. One arm was in a sling and his face was covered with bruises and cuts. He looked like someone had shot him, beat the shit out of him, and then shot him again.

Probably because that was exactly what they’d done.

“What are you doing here?” I asked. “Why aren’t you in bed?”
