That was enough to draw Soren’s attention. He lifted his gaze, holding it on his second for a fraction longer than usual.

“Then clarify.”

“They believe the ritual was not purely tactical.”

The implication did not need to be voiced.

Soren’s expression remained unchanged, but his focus sharpened.

“Belief becomes a problem only when it begins to influence behavior,” he said.

“It already has,” his second replied, stepping closer and lowering his voice despite the empty chamber. “Some of them think you meant to claim her before the Council ever convened.”

“I did,” Soren said evenly.

“For leverage,” the wolf pressed.

“Yes.”

His second studied him, unconvinced.

“That’s not how it’s being read.”

Soren’s gaze held steady. “Then tell me how it is being read.”

“They don’t see it as disruption alone,” his second said. “They see it as you taking something Frostvein considered untouchable.”

The phrasing was careful, but the meaning was not.

Soren’s jaw tightened, though only slightly.

“We marked a fracture,” he said. “Nothing more.”

“They’re not speaking about a fracture,” his second replied. “They’re speaking about a woman.”

The silence that followed carried more weight than the words themselves.

Soren turned his attention back to the map, though his hand stilled against the carved stone.

“Perception can be corrected,” he said.

“Only if it hasn’t already settled,” his second answered. “And she isn’t helping you contain it.”

Soren’s fingers pressed slightly into the edge of the table.

“Explain.”

“She doesn’t behave like spoil,” the wolf said. “She doesn’t shrink, she doesn’t wait to be positioned, and she doesn’t hesitate when she’s expected to act.”

Soren listened without interrupting.

“And some of them respect that,” his second added.

That word mattered more than the rest.

“Respect doesn’t undermine structure,” Soren said.

“No,” the wolf agreed. “But it shifts attention. And once that happens, people start assigning meaning you didn’t.”
